Extragalactic Postdoctoral Fellow

Description

We invite applications for an Extragalactic Postdoctoral Fellow position at the Carnegie Science Observatories in Pasadena, California. The fellow will work with Dr. Andrew Newman and collaborators and is expected to lead a research program related to JWST Cycle 3 integral field spectroscopy (GO-4903) of z~2-3 quiescent galaxies that are gravitationally lensed. Desirable expertise includes, but is not limited to, one or more of the following areas: (1) reduction and analysis of galaxy spectra, (2) measurements of stellar chemical abundances and/or galactic chemical evolution modeling, (3) extraction of star formation histories, (4) stellar kinematics and dynamical modeling, or (5) gravitational lensing. The appointment will be for a two-year term with a possible extension to a third year. The start date is flexible provided it is no later than September 2025. Carnegie Science owns and operates the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, which includes the twin 6.5-meter Magellan telescopes, the 2.5-meter du Pont telescope (currently dedicated to Sloan Digital Sky Survey-V observations), and the 1.0-meter Swope telescope. Carnegie is also a full institutional member of SDSS-V. Based in Pasadena, between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, the Observatories provide an exceptional research environment and access to resources for theorists, observers, and instrumentalists alike. Scientific computing at Carnegie is supported by our 19% share in the Resnick HPC Center at Caltech in addition to local computing resources. Fellows will have access to dedicated computational facilities and Carnegie observing facilities on the same basis as the scientific staff.
