Coordinates inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with contracts, standards, and specifications. Creates and maintains documentation of site findings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*

Position Specific Summary

The Construction Inspector position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department is responsible for conducting inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with city codes, policies, construction plans, and regulatory standards.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Section Manager. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drives city vehicles to various locations, conducts site inspections of active construction sites to ensure compliance. Inspects work in various stages of construction, including civil site work, grading, drainage, drainage structures, landscaping, and rainwater harvesting. Reviews approved construction drawings and documents to ensure field work has been constructed in accordance with approved construction documents and is code compliant.
  • Communicates inspection status, results and resolves questions with contractors, consultants, and other customers. Addresses customer inquiries and resolves concerns by providing explanations of relevant codes, permit issues, and site-specific inspection issues. Communicates via in-person, by phone, or email all while maintaining a respectful approach towards the customer.
  • Monitors assigned City vehicle for maintenance, maintains proper personal protective equipment, and enforces safety protocols in the office and field. Informs the supervisor of any equipment that is damaged or needing replacement immediately after checking equipment. Delivers the assigned vehicle to the fleet services shop for the routine maintenance.
  • Participates in code training and education to maintain and build best practices, related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and other appropriate site compliance requirements.
  • Maintains accurate records of site inspections by entering data and inspection comments into the City’s permitting system. Reports any issues to the supervisor.
  • Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position requires frequent driving to inspection sites and frequent exposure to outdoor locations to perform field inspections.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

6 months post high school

Work Experience:

Four (4) years of directly related experience

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

6 months post high school

or a related field.

Work Experience:

Prior work experience in-Construction Management, Inspections, Plan Review

Skills:

License/Certifications:

Valid and unrestricted Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division

Languages:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years post high school and four (4) years of municipal site review or inspection experience related to compliance with applicable building, zoning, engineering, or development codes and standards, as demonstrated by: 
Engineering, landscaping, or zoning inspections 

Landscape inspections related to species identification 

Rainwater harvesting design, techniques, and best practices
