About the role

Overview

The Medical Director provides occupational health services to support the Health Unit (HU).  The Medical Director is pivotal in overseeing a comprehensive health program that delivers high-quality medical services, health education, and ensures compliance with occupational health regulations. The Medical Director will embody Cayuse's Core Values by fostering a culture of safety, wellness, and proactive health management. 

 

Provide non-emergency and emergency treatment (fitness for duty exams, preventative health screening exams, administration of allergy shots and other immunizations, treatment and/or assessment of on-the-job illnesses or injuries, etc.).

  • Provides and promotes wellness initiatives (prevention oriented clinical assessments, health screenings, immunizations, etc.).
  • Provide treatment for minor injuries (suture and suture removal, abrasions, minor musculoskeletal injuries, etc.).
  • Provide medical consultations for illnesses which include non-occupational and occupational illnesses.
  • Maintain medical surveillance program to meet the requirements of the Washington D.C. Facility (DCF).
  • Document and maintain records of employee injury and wellness data using Occupational Health and Safety Software.
  • Document positive and negative health trends, identifying opportunities for improvement and achievements.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Medical Director and as a consultant on all matters regarding occupational medicine and other matters outlined herein.
  • Provide clinical medicine services, involving the performance of diagnostic and preventive health care, including physical examination and emergency treatment, as appropriate, as well as preventive health screening programs, occupational health surveillance examinations, health counseling, etc.
  • Provide consultative services including but not limited to, management consultation, training, education, evaluation of unusual event exposures, American for Disabilities Act consultation, workers' compensation or disability case review and medical fit-for-duty evaluations.
  • Evaluate and render opinions regarding the medical aspects of fitness-for-duty exams as needed.
  • On occasion, conduct peer-to-peer phone calls for work and non-work-related illnesses and injuries to advise of the agency’s Light and Limited duty program. The Medical Director will assess medical for work and non-work-related illnesses and injuries to determine if the agency may be able to offer the employee a Light and Limited duty assignment.
  • Evaluate health services provided by the BEPHU, and make recommendations about changes in service, as appropriate.
  • Provide medical and administrative support, as appropriate, to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) staff in connection with the EAP (i.e. for alcohol abuse, drug abuse, emotional stress, etc.).
  • Serve as a member of committees formed to determine policy that may require input from the Medical Director.
  • Draft articles related to occupational health in the EHS Newsletter.
  • Draft policies, guidelines, and procedures, and/or review and comment on existing policies and procedures as needed.
  • Accompany a nurse on all emergency calls outside of the Health Unit.
  • Work with web-based computer systems, Occupational Health and Safety software, as well as Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Monitor all mailboxes relating to health concerns declared by local, state, and/or federal Government for the Washington DC (DCF) and Fort Worth, TX (WCF) Facilities. This includes responding to questionnaires, via email and phone calls.
  • On occasion, review DCF workers' compensation claims and medical documentation.
  • Approve paperwork for fitness center applications.
  • Review and approve paperwork for physicals.
  • Review audiograms, determine work -elatedness of hearing loss, follow-up work-related hearing loss, and manage audiometric databases.
  • Review and interpret spirometry tests (Pulmonary Function Test).
  • Write prescriptions for employees covered by this contract.
  • Must be able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocol.
  • Maintain work area, exam rooms, and supplies.
  • Maintain professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.
  • Attend meetings as requested.
  • Follow all policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to employer work practices as described in Cayuse policies.
  • Perform additional reports as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
