Job Summary
The Voice Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise voice and unified communications solutions across Avaya and Cisco platforms. This role ensures reliable, secure, and high-performing telecommunication services for the organization. Key duties include managing Avaya Communication Manager, Session Manager, and related systems, as well as Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Unity Connection, and voice gateways. The engineer will handle system upgrades, troubleshoot complex voice, and network issues, configure SIP trunks and SBCs, and optimize performance for VoIP and collaboration tools. Additional responsibilities include integrating voice systems with network infrastructure, maintaining compliance with security standards, and creating technical documentation for operational support.
Essential Functions
- Design, implement, and maintain Avaya and Cisco voice and unified communications systems, including Avaya Communication Manager, Session Manager, System Manager, and Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Unity Connection, and voice gateways.
- Configure and manage SIP trunks, Session Border Controllers (SBCs), and VoIP protocols (SIP, H.323) to ensure secure and reliable voice connectivity.
- Perform system upgrades, patches, and migrations for both Avaya and Cisco platforms while minimizing downtime and ensuring compliance with organizational standards.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex voice and network issues, including call quality, latency, jitter, and packet loss, using diagnostic tools and logs.
- Integrate voice systems with network infrastructure, ensuring proper QoS configurations and compatibility with enterprise networking standards.
- Monitor system performance and capacity, proactively identifying and addressing potential issues to maintain high availability and reliability.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system diagrams, configuration guides, and operational procedures for both platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (network, security, and application teams) to support projects, deployments, and incident resolution.
- Provide technical support and knowledge transfer to internal teams, ensuring smooth operations and adherence to best practices.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and vendor updates for Avaya and Cisco solutions, recommending improvements and enhancements as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Associate's Degree or equivalent
- 2 years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, and supporting Avaya and Cisco voice systems in enterprise environments
- Experience handling system upgrades and migrations across Avaya and Cisco platforms
- Experience troubleshooting complex voice/network issues (call quality, latency, jitter, packet loss, etc.)
- Experience collaborating on projects with network, security, and application teams
- Willing to support an on-call rotation outside of normal business hours once every 11 weeks
