Job Description
Position Overview
The Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning (K&L) is an essential leader within our regional academic team. The person in this role is responsible for the leadership of the network’s flagship teacher development and school leader development programs. Teacher development programs include: the Capital Teaching Residency (CTR), New Teacher Launch, the Fellowship in Special Education and the newly launched teacher leadership initiative. Leadership development programs include the New Deans and Coaches Cohort, Rising Leaders for new Vice-Principals and the Principal-in-Residence program. The Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning is responsible for launching new programs to create a robust school-based talent development continuum, setting vision for the team and how the programs work together, collaborating with regional leaders outside of the team for investment and input and directly managing the Senior Director(s) and Director(s) across the Knowledge & Learning team.
In addition to the responsibilities overseeing the Knowledge and Learning team, the person in this role supports the collaboration and coherence of KIPP DC’s regional academic staff development program, including the execution of regional summer professional developments and periodic special regional programming throughout the year. In this role, the Managing Director of Knowledge and Learning works collaboratively with other senior leaders across the academic team as well as the team of deputy chiefs of schools.
The person in this role also provides thought partnership across functional teams such as the Talent and DEI teams, etc. and cultivates and maintains strong relationships with external partners to drive our talent development and professional learning goals.
The Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning role is an exempt position and will report to the Chief Academic Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team & Program Management (65%)
- Directly manage Knowledge & Learning team senior director(s) and director(s) who run the following programs along the continuum of school-based roles:
- Capital Teaching Residency: one year residency program for aspiring general educators which involves certification coursework, graded assignments and ongoing coaching and feedback
- Fellowship in Special Education: one year certification program for aspiring special educators; serves KIPP DC and educators across the city as a revenue generating tuition-based program; includes certification coursework, graded assignments and ongoing coaching and feedback
- New Teacher Launch: small group school-based professional learning communities to support the practice and well-being of new to KIPP DC and novice teachers in early childhood and elementary schools
- Teacher Leadership: network-wide coherence, structures and programs for teacher leaders
- New Dean and Coach Cohort: one year professional development community for individuals new to the dean and coach roles across KIPP DC schools
- Rising Leaders: one year professional development community for individuals new to the vice-principal roles across KIPP DC; includes professional development, one-on-one leadership coaching and application projects
- Principals-in-Residence: one to two year training experience for aspiring KIPP DC principals; includes application projects, leadership coaching and readiness assessments
- Recruit, select, onboard develop, and manage the Knowledge & Learning team’s 12 team members
- Cultivate a team culture that is aligned with the vision for the team’s goals and in keeping with KIPP DC’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity
- Create and deliver on a professional development or coaching plans for all members of the team to support their competencies, skills, and agreed upon growth goals
- Develop and monitor the Knowledge & Learning team’s fiscal budget aligned to team goals and in accordance with KIPP DC’s policies
