About the role

Join the Hach R&D team as a Mechanical Engineering Intern and gain hands-on experience designing and testing real-world water quality instrumentation. This internship provides exposure to cross-functional engineering, from CAD and fabrication to prototyping and validation. You’ll work closely with experienced mechanical engineers and Advanced Research Chemists in a collaborative team environment.  This is an onsite role based in Loveland, Colorado.

This role is ideal for students who have completed project-based coursework such as CAD design for sensor housings or manufacturing coursework involving tooling and machining. Candidates with club-based or competition experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the mechanical design and prototyping of components for water quality analyzers
  • Collaborate in Advanced Research team members with cross-functional engineering input
  • Build and test prototype assemblies using common lab and machine shop tools
  • Utilize SolidWorks to update and create CAD models, especially for fluidic and sensor integration
  • Document findings from prototype testing and contribute to design improvements
  • Apply past team-based project experience to real-world industrial designs
  • Conduct basic experiments to validate mechanical concepts using feedback from operators and field engineers

Desired Characteristics

  • Passionate about mechanical systems and hands-on engineering
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools
  • Comfortable working with tools such as lathes, drill presses, and hand tools
  • Demonstrated project leadership in academic or extracurricular teams
  • Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced setting

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a BS or MS program in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Junior or Senior standing as of Spring 2025
  • Experience with SolidWorks and basic mechanical design principles
  • Comfort with prototyping and tooling from lab or class projects (e.g., design/fab courses)
  • Enthusiasm for environmental technology or water purification systems

Preferred Experience

  • Experience designing structural or sensor housings with fluid system applications
  • Involvement in engineering organizations or competitions like TSA
  • Interest in sustainable engineering or real-world environmental applications
  • Volunteer work or community service showing initiative and teamwork

The below range reflects the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. An associate’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.

The compensation range for this role is $16.00 - $17.00 USD per hour.
