Basic Function

The Quality Control Lab Chemist will provide technical, operational and analytical support to the quality control lab, production units and business teams for driving improvements to product quality operating process, and the QC laboratory.  The Chemist is responsible in supporting compliance requirements in QC lab for ISO, USP, ASTM and other industry standards.  The focus of the position is to ensure the laboratory provides accurate, reliable and timely data and support to internal and external customers in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining a low cost approach.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist with recommendations and setting direction for lab HSE, methods, procedures, techniques and technical guidance for Quality Lab through guidance of senior chemist and lab specialist
• Work with senior chemists, lab technicians and lab specialists in understanding of laboratory systems, methods, troubleshooting for technical assurance
• Develop ability to challenge the status quo in lab practices and methods to provide better response and data to the supporting units and business teams
• Learn and lead efforts on troubleshooting of laboratory issues and ensure calibration and maintenance of equipment
• Provide technical training on laboratory quality systems for laboratory technicians
• Learn industry best practice knowledge and apply to quality control environment, as career advances develop and maintain best practice knowledge for lab
• Provide technical input on process chemistry for operating targets, troubleshooting or improvement projects
• Focal point for operating units to interface with Quality Control Lab
• Assist operating units in resolving issues through understanding of chemistry
• Support business teams to develop testing protocols and methods for new product development, is a technical resource for customer audits in addition to troubleshooting issues on existing products or feed stocks
• Identify opportunities for improvement for laboratory testing and methods and cost reduction

Min. Qualifications

• A Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry with 6-8 years of lab experience OR High School Diploma/GED with 8-10 years of related industrial experience in a refining, petrochemical, chemical environment or related industry
• Working knowledge of industry standards such as ISO, USP, ASTM, EPA is preferred
• Demonstrated IT capability in Microsoft Office Suite
• Basic understanding of troubleshooting techniques with ability to communicate results
• Must be self-motivated with the ability to initiate continuous improvement

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Chemistry Degree (Masters or PhD)
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes
