We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.
Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.
Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is in search of a talented Director, Principal Gifts Strategy to lead and coordinate high-priority, large-scale university philanthropic proposals from concept to initial implementation as needed. The person in this role will work collaboratively across the University and Medicine to support high-level strategic planning processes and initiatives that result in new principal level proposals that will be instrumental in securing support in support of the mission of Johns Hopkins University and Medicine.
The Director, Principal Gifts Strategy for the Office of Principal Gifts in Development & Alumni Relations has key responsibilities in multiple, distinct leadership areas essential for the planning and successful launch of new transformational projects at Johns Hopkins University. In addition to Principal Level Proposal creation, the Director, Principal Gifts Strategy will partner with Development & Alumni Relations and Johns Hopkins Leadership in developing proposals for and standing up donor-funded programs, as well as aid in the evaluation and stewardship of these programs. This individual will be expected to work at both strategic and tactical levels.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages and actively participates in strategic planning on big idea development that results in proposals; extensively collaborates with Johns Hopkins leadership and faculty
- Transforms big ideas into proposal concepts guiding the Proposals Team through proposal creation, research
- Lead efforts for data collection, report writing, and attend regular meetings with Johns Hopkins leadership, the internal DAR team across Johns Hopkins, and with donors and potential donors;
- Oversees daily administration (agenda setting, minutes, and ensure execution of action items) for multiple complex projects at once;
- Liaise multiple departments and direct individuals and stakeholders to meet responsibilities and deadlines;
- Establishes and staffs working groups to include membership from Central Budget & Finance, Office of the Provost, Development and Alumni Relations (VP and Associate VP), Marketing & Communications, and the Office of the President.
- Creates principal gifts program oversight structures, and oversees performance metrics to ensure the successful completion of short and long-term goals
- Partner with key project key representatives across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine to provide regular updates and reports to donors
- Creates opportunity for outreach with external partners and donors with communications and onsite campus engagement programs
- Over time, develop a portfolio of approximately 20-25 principal gift prospects
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Five years of related experience required.
- This position does not allow for an equivalency.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Business, Public Administration or another relevant field is preferred.
- Fundraising experience in a complex, matrixed organization including proposal development and solicitation implementation
- Excellent project management skills required. Previous experience with managing large scale, high-priority projects in higher education, or a similar field, preferred.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Ability to balance and prioritize tasks, and deliver timely outcomes.
- Effective team management and communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Strong interest in conducting field research in academic environments.
