Purpose

The Director of Finance is responsible for leading the fast-paced financial operations and business management of the Blanton Museum of Art, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.  The Blanton is significantly self-funded and relies on identifying multiple revenue streams to support its operations, including fundraising and earned income.  Therefore, this position plays a critical role in financial planning, resource allocation, and fiscal oversight to ensure the museum operates as a strategic, responsive, and effective business entity and auxiliary unit of UT-Austin. The Director of Finance acts as a key advisor to the museum Director and other members of senior leadership on financial matters and provides data-driven insights and recommendations to support informed decision-making. This position requires a focus on collaboration, pro-active communication, informed strategizing, and responsive business planning to ensure financial stability, align with institutional mission and goals, and support growth of the museum’s program.

Responsibilities

Financial Planning and Budget Development

  • Lead the development of short- and long-term financial plans and forecasts, multi-year budget planning, and variance analyses to support museum-wide strategic planning efforts

  • Develop and implement pro-active financial strategies, policies, and procedures aligning financial goals with museum priorities

  • Develop, manage, and monitor in real time the Blanton’s annual budget and budgeting process on a multi-tiered level, ensuring alignment with museum strategies; manage required budget documents for Provost Office

  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue generation while maintaining financial sustainability

  • Continuously assess and enhance financial workflows, reporting structures, and budgetary processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness

  • Stay informed of museum industry trends and best practices, university policies, and financial regulations that impact Blanton operations

  • Manage special financial projects with museum-wide impact such as analysis of shipping and insurance costs, or review of endowment funding

  • Lead the adoption of new financial tools and technologies that enhance museum budget planning and financial analysis capabilities

Financial Oversight and Advising

  • Provide high-level oversight, management, and strategic analysis of all financial and accounting functions of the museum

  • Oversee high volume of complex business-related contracts, including, but not limited to, exhibitions, loan agreements, art acquisition purchases, and capital construction projects; includes direct communication with UT Business Contracts and UT Legal
