Director, Quantum Networking
IonQAbout the role
IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
We are seeking a visionary and experienced leader to direct and grow our Quantum Networking team. As the Director of Quantum Networking, you will be at the forefront of this critical initiative, spearheading the design, development, and integration of the essential components and subsystems that form the backbone of future distributed quantum computation and communication. You will build and manage a high-performing, multidisciplinary team, driving innovation and execution in this cutting-edge field. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of quantum technology and redefine networking.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and Inspire: Build, manage, mentor, and grow a world-class team comprising physicists, hardware engineers (optical, electrical, mechanical), and software engineers focused on quantum networking. Foster a collaborative, innovative, results-driven culture.
- Strategic Roadmap Development: Define and execute the technical strategy and roadmap for IonQ's quantum networking hardware and software, aligning with the company's overall quantum computing objectives.
- System & Component Development: Oversee the end-to-end development lifecycle – from concept and simulation through design, prototyping, testing, and integration – of quantum networking components and subsystems. This includes elements such as quantum-compatible photonic interfaces, entanglement distribution modules, network control software, and classical/quantum interface layers.
- Technical Oversight: Provide expert technical guidance and architectural direction for the development of both hardware (e.g., photon sources, detectors, transducers, optical links) and software (e.g., control systems, network protocols, error management, simulation tools).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with quantum computing hardware teams, software platform teams, research scientists, and product management to ensure seamless integration and alignment of quantum networking capabilities with IonQ's systems and goals.
- Project & Resource Management: Manage project timelines, budgets, resources, and risks effectively to ensure timely delivery of milestones and objectives.
- Innovation & IP: Drive innovation within the team, encourage exploration of novel approaches, and contribute to IonQ's intellectual property portfolio in the quantum networking domain.
- Performance & Quality: Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for quantum networking systems and components, ensuring high standards of quality, reliability, and performance.
You'd be a good fit with:
