Description

The School of Health Profession (SHP) at Stony Brook University invites applicants to apply for the position of Program Director/Chairperson, Department of Respiratory Care.  This is a non-tenure track, 12-month, full-time faculty appointment at the Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor level that will provide physical presence, direct oversight and manage the Department of Respiratory Care that is delivered on the Stony Brook University East Campus-Health Sciences Center.  The Program Director/Chairperson of the Department of Respiratory Care reports to the Dean of the School of Health Professions.

 

In support of the Department of Respiratory Care’s mission, the Program Director/Chairperson is expected to maintain a teaching load and participate in scholarship and service activities while lending leadership and vision to the Department through sound management of fiscal budgets culminating in long-term fiscal stability within the Department, strategic growth initiatives, curriculum development and alignment, accreditation, faculty professional development and faculty obligation planning.  The program director/chairperson articulates the vision, mission, and goals of the department in pursuit of these aims, and maintaining a climate that promotes inclusion, teamwork, professionalism, innovation, and exemplary educational programming impact.  Further, the Program Director/Chairperson will support a shared sense of community through engagement with all departments and programs within the School of Health Professions. 

 

Specifically, the major responsibilities of the Program Director/Chairperson are to:

  • Provide leadership to achieve the highest possible level of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service activities of the Department.

  • Oversee program directors for other educational programs and opportunities in the Department.

  • Coordinate the Department’s educational programs with the faculty, schedule courses and assign instructors to these courses in consultation with the Dean's Office. 

  • Assess needs, recruit, mentor, supervise, and evaluate adjunct faculty as needed.

  • Supervise staff in the Department and evaluate staff for the purposes of appointment, reappointment and permanent appointment.

  • Maintain and ensure program excellence in compliance with accreditation standards.

  • Maintain accreditation by sending and acquiring Annual Resource Surveys, Graduate Surveys, & Employer Surveys. Responsible for completing Annual Accreditation Report 

  • Demonstrate a vision to strategize, plan and develop new program proposals for consideration by the Dean’s Office for future educational opportunities.

  • Set and communicate expectations for faculty obligations in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service.

  • Conduct annual reviews of department faculty and staff. 

  • Maintain and implement processes for professional development, appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure of faculty.  Appoint committees and provide oversight for the compilation of faculty dossiers for such evaluations.

  • Provide mentoring and mentoring structures for the department faculty and staff.

  • Catalyze the bridging of both scholarly and educational programs across departments and schools/colleges.

  • Oversee department finances through planning and administering of the annual budget in consultation with the Dean’s Office.

  • Lead the recruitment efforts, when needed, for replacement or net growth of faculty and staff, with attention to the diversity goals of the School and University.

  • Communicate and interact with the Dean’s Office and other campus departments on personnel issues, when and as necessary.

  • Oversee recruitment, admissions and retention of students in the Department.

  • Oversee and lead all issues with regards to student conduct, academic progress, or other related student issues when and as necessary.

  • Develop and expand the scholarship activity including solicitation of extramural funding and scholarly output.

  • Seek and facilitate external giving and resource development for the Department.

  • Serve as a central figure available to address questions, concerns, and communications from students, faculty, staff, parents, guardians, and others with the expectation of a resolution of issues at the department
