About the role

Overview

The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is seeking a well-organized, team player to join our Planning Section at the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. The planning unit implements a variety of the Department's core operations and special projects. In this position you would have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the Department and develop strong communication, facilitation and project management skills.

 

Example projects for this position include: 

 

  • Focus on providing program support to the section Environmental Careers and Opportunities (ECO) AmeriCorps Program. ECO AmeriCorps currently supports 24 full-time AmeriCorps members focused on water protection and restoration, environmental community outreach and education and improved access to public land, clean water and universal recycling at multiple community host sites around the state of Vermont. Specifically, this position will work with program staff on recruiting and onboarding members for the 2025-2026 service year and assist with training and support for members currently enrolled in the program. The position will also provide ongoing support to the program during the service year by assisting with development of our annual training calendar and review quarterly program reports for each member to prepare reports for our state and federal partners that contain specific metrics on how the program is advancing environmental protection. This position will also assist with the development and support of the Department's internship program.
  • Assist with implementation of the Department's accessibility initiatives. This includes reviewing and coordinating the translation of written materials, coordinating disability accommodations for the general public to engage with the Department and supporting the implementation of the Department's non-discrimination program.
  • Perform data collection and analysis to support the Department's ongoing operations. Each year the Department is required to submit a number of reports to EPA, the Legislative and other state agencies and partners that include both qualitative and quantitative data. This position will work closely with the Program Manger to improve our data collection and reporting systems and complete these annual reports. This work involves communicating with staff and managers across the Department to learn about their work.

Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

Bachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND one (1) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.

 

OR

 

Four (4) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with national service program as staff or participant
  • Experience managing staff, temporary staff and/or volunteers
  • Ability to motivate others
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
