Job Description

These positions are for our Apprentice Development Technician program at the Tucson Proving Ground, one of Caterpillar’s premier research and validation facilities. This role is an exciting vocational opportunity in a highly multidisciplinary environment. This role is very hands-on. Applicants should be interested in working with large mining equipment.

Job Duties

  • Assist an experienced development technician in the execution of operational test plans.  Follow written work instructions, repair manuals, engineering drawings, engineering specifications, and solid models for assembly of complex machine assemblies. 
  • Learn and develop and understanding of machines and machine systems to perform troubleshooting of malfunctioning components, systems, and machines.
  • Learn and engage in Caterpillar's culture of safety and participate in efforts and activities to continuously improve the safety of operations.
  • While working on new products, identify potential issues, potential system and component problems, potential maintainability problems, and potential failure modes.  Communicate observations and findings to engineers and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Provide input to supervisor and team for continuous improvement (CI) and capital projects to improve safety, quality, velocity, and cost.  Aid supervisor in the implementation of other employee’s CI ideas

Mechanic Program

The TPG Mechanic Apprentice program is a fantastic opportunity to grow your skills and work with world-class mechanics at Caterpillar!  As an apprentice mechanic at the Tucson Proving Ground, you will work with an experienced mechanic to configure large mining equipment based on an engineering-developed test plan. Preparing the machine for testing could be as straightforward as removing a panel or disassembling the entire machine and moving it down to the frame. In this challenging role, you will learn all about Caterpillar mining equipment and the engine, hydraulic, electronic, and powertrain systems that make the equipment function. This is a critical role that will require critical thinking and a desire to be hands-on.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience with MS Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Current enrollment in eligible Pima Community College Automotive programs.
  • Must be able to work continuously on one’s feet for 8 to 10 hours per day in a variety of environmental conditions (i.e. inside/outside, hot/cold/inclement weather, dusty environment)
  • Able to use a personal computer to access work management systems and documents and
  • Must be comfortable working at heights, using forklifts, and operating cranes (will be trained).
  • Must be able to work 32 hours per week. Regular hours range between 7am and 4:30 pm but accommodations can be made with supervisor discussion.
  • Strong interest in working on and around large mining equipment (mining trucks, dozers, wheel loaders, etc)
  • Project or Team Leadership experience
  • Previous relevant experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Hands-on experience or knowledge of mechanics/instrumentation/fabrication processes
