The Managing Finance Director, Dean's Office (MFD) serves as a strategic financial and administrative partner to the leadership of College of Arts and Sciences (the College) and its departments and programs. This position is responsible for ensuring that College staff, faculty, and students receive high quality administrative support in a manner compliant with university policies and procedures. They are also responsible for directing and managing the comprehensive business affairs of the programs, including management and analysis of departmental budgets, information systems, training and development, safety and security, and regulatory compliance. With a shared oversight of human resources from a financial stewardship perspective, additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage, direct, and lead the daily operation of multiple organizational units or multi-faceted academic and research departments within a School.

  • Set the strategic financial direction and leadership of financial and administrative performance.

  • Manage and lead unit operations, which may include consultation on space and staffing, with more direct oversight on equipment and leasing.

  • Identify short and long-term goals, overseeing resource allocation to meet projections and priorities, while controlling expenditures and account statements to ensure compliance and fiscal integrity.

  • Develop, plan, and execute special projects, typically managing budgets above $130M.              

Work Interactions

The MFD oversees all planning and execution activities for the designated units. Primarily focused on planning, the MFD is the top point of escalation on issues within the school, supervise work for deputy and planning analysts. The MFD is focused on planning and analysis, internal controls, and approvals of critical day-to-day activities to ensure congruence with budget and projections. The MFD reports directly to the Dean of the College, but maintains a dotted line reporting relationship to the Vice President and Chief Business Officer for the Main Campus. The MFD works closely with partner offices across the College as well as the administration of the Main Campus and the University including the Office of the CFO, Research, and facilities. This position will collaborate closely with the College senior staff and administrative team.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s, Business or accounting preferred; A Bachelor’s degree plus substantial experience in closely related fields may substitute for a Master’s degree

  • 10 years of progressively responsible leadership and supervision in finance and administration, preferably in higher education 

  • Building and utilizing financial models; business analytics expertise

  • Proficiency with complex financial and longitudinal planning, financial forecasting, and revenue and expenditure management

  • Expert level of proficiency in Excel with prior experience managing complex teams

  • Prior experience establishing and managing budgets of at least $20M and in using electronic financial management tools to track revenue and expenses, generate reports, and perform financial analysis and modeling

  • Demonstrated experience with complex strategic planning and resource allocation

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, with a mastery of Excel

  • Well-developed managerial, decision-making, planning, organizational, analytical, problem-solving and leadership skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex teams on a day-to-day basis and inspire a high level of commitment and performance
