About the role

The Enoch Pratt Free Library has an opening for an Executive Director of Equity and Fair Practice.  The Director will be a key member of the library’s executive leadership team and serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and HR department in developing, implementing, and advancing systemwide diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The Director will provide forward-thinking guidance to ensure that the Pratt Library continues to foster a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment for staff, patrons, and the broader Baltimore community.

Location:  400 Cathedral Street Baltimore, MD 21201

Salary: $93,622 to $149,726 annually

Job Type: On-site Full-Time, Benefits Included

Summary of Duties:

Strategic Leadership & Oversight

  • Create and conduct comprehensive needs assessments to identify opportunities for improvement and cultural change in order to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community across all levels of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.

  • Serve as the point person in the HR department for diversity issues. HR Ombudsman for diversity issues, partnering closely with Human Resources,

  • Work closely with the training & development team to evaluate and deliver policies, programs, and procedures that support an inclusive workforce.

  • Develop and implement strategies to attract, retain, and promote a diverse workforce reflective of the Baltimore community.

  • Work collaboratively with the library’s recruiters, employee relations staff, and programming team to establish measurable goals, outcomes, and success metrics for DEI initiatives.

Organizational Culture and Change Management

  • Act as an advisor to library directors and the Executive Leadership Team to negotiate cultural change.

  • Identify perceived and actual barriers to inclusion.

  • Serve as a resource and facilitator for resolving conflict through education, coaching, and dialogue.

Training and Professional Development

  • Work with the staff development and training team to develop and deliver programs that educate employees and managers on how to accommodate and appreciate individual differences in the workplace.

  • Stay current on DEI trends, research, and best practices by engaging with professional associations, peer organizations, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Equity Leadership

  • Lead the Office of Equity and Fair Practice, overseeing staff and resources dedicated to advancing systemwide equity initiatives and supporting the Library’s DEI strategic goals.

  • Serve as the Equity Coordinator for the agency-wide equity initiative for the City of Baltimore.

  • Lead the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness Council in its mission to recommend and implement actions that strengthen both internal culture and external community engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration, Library and Information Science, Education, or a related field.

  • Seven (7) years of leadership experience in organizational development, human resources, or diversity, equity, and inclusion work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) years of experience in DEI leadership, preferably in a public sector, nonprofit, or educational environment.

  • Related human resources experience, including preparation and implementation of training materials and diversity initiatives.

  • Experience developing and managing large departmental budgets.

  • Experience working in a metropolitan nonprofit, university, government agency, or similarly complex environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to engage effectively with elected officials, board members, community leaders, and philanthropic partners.

  • Commitment to and passion for the mission of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement organization-wide DEI strategies, programs, and policies.

  • Proven success in building collaborative partnerships internally and externally to advance DEI goals.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and strategic planning skills.

  • Effective leadership, critical thinking, and adept problem-solving skills.
