Active Transportation/Vision Zero Senior Engineer

This is a provisional appointment.

 

Under the director of the Commissioner or designee, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) is seeking a highly motivated Active Transportation/Vision Zero Senior Engineer to work on projects that will realize the City’s vision to create streets and public spaces that are vibrant, multi-modal, resilient, and technologically advanced. The selected individual will work to lower the number of fatal and serious crashes on Boston’s roadways and increase the number of people bicycling and walking in the City.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

 

• Prepares concept designs, engineered / technical drawings, and stamped plans for pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
• Reviews proposed engineered designs for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
• Prepares engineered / technical drawings to develop design standards for simple interventions such as “daylighting” and crosswalk installations.
• Ensures accuracy of striping and sign installation.
• Develops and provides input on traffic signal timing and phasing plans.
• Analyzes crash data and identifies potential safety countermeasures.
• Conducts feasibility studies to recommend the layout, design, and placement of traffic control devices.
• Provides a comprehensive review of plans, reports, and traffic impact studies developed by teammates, consultants, and/or other public agencies to ensure safe and efficient travel for all modes.
• Attends public meetings as a representative of the Department and provides presentations and share project information.
• Reviews and responds to constituent requests in a timely and professional manner.
• Directs and supervises other engineers’ activities.
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

• Four (4) years of traffic engineering experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
• Working knowledge of NACTO’s Transit, Street, and Urban Bikeway Design guides, MassDOT’s Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide, Boston Complete Streets Guidelines, MUTCD, and relevant AASHTO and FHWA guidelines.
• Working knowledge of Synchro, SimTraffic, and AutoCAD software packages.
• Experience in successfully completing traffic engineering projects such as sign and pavement marking plans, safety studies, pedestrian and bicycle facility projects, complete street design projects, intersection design projects, and designing and implementing “rapid-response” installations using measures such as lane markings, flex posts, and traffic signal timing changes.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate is preferred.
• Experience working in multi-disciplinary outcome-oriented teams.
• Experience working with diverse communities.
• Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of public agencies, private consultants, and community groups.
• Proven research, writing, oral, and graphic presentation skills.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator License is required.

 

THIS POSITION MAY REQUIRE EMPLOYEE TO ATTEND OCCASIONAL EVENING AND/OR WEEKEND MEETINGS and/or SITE VISITS IN SUPPORT OF POSITION’S DUTIES.
