Current Assignment

The Section Manager, Power & Mechanical Maintenance leads a shift-based team responsible for the maintenance, repair, and reliability of traction power, electro-mechanical, and HVAC systems that keep BART trains running safely across the district. This position oversees daily operations for an assigned shift, directs a skilled workforce of technicians and mechanics, and serves as a critical link between frontline maintenance activities and district-wide service reliability goals.

The District is focused on strengthening asset reliability, reducing system delays attributable to mechanical and electrical failures, and modernizing preventive maintenance practices across an aging and expanding infrastructure. This position will play a central role in advancing those priorities by improving work planning and scheduling practices, supporting the transition of new and upgraded electro-mechanical systems into revenue service, and reinforcing a strong safety culture among maintenance personnel. The successful candidate will be expected to identify opportunities to improve service delivery, strengthen coordination across shifts and divisions, and support staff development through structured training and mentorship.

Given current operational demands, the position also requires close attention to inventory planning, accurate maintenance recordkeeping, and proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials generated through maintenance activities. The Section Manager will be expected to represent the Power and Mechanical Maintenance Division effectively in interactions with other departments, outside agencies, and the public, while maintaining a consistent focus on safety, reliability, and accountability.

The most qualified candidates for this position will have highly developed competencies in the following areas, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be articulated during the selection process:

  • Managing and coordinating shift-based maintenance and repair operations for power, electro-mechanical, and HVAC systems
  • Applying current safety principles and practices to industrial maintenance environments
  • Implementing and sustaining effective preventive maintenance programs
  • Planning, scheduling, and overseeing work assignments for skilled maintenance staff
  • Evaluating new equipment specifications and coordinating equipment transitions into operational service
  • Managing inventory planning, control, and non-inventory procurement processes
  • Selecting, training, motivating, and evaluating technical staff, including addressing performance deficiencies
  • Preparing clear, concise, and accurate reports and maintenance records
  • Interpreting and applying relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships across shifts, divisions, and outside organizations
