Fire Apparatus Mechanic (Temporary)

***THIS IS A PART-TIME TEMPORARY POSITION. CONTRACT UP TO 6 MONTHS***

General Nature of Work
The Fire Apparatus Mechanic will be responsible for repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles for the Fire Department. They will evaluate the condition of the vehicle and will work to ensure that the vehicle is in peak condition for county use.  

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs engine, exhaust electrical, brake, and transmission repairs on assigned vehicles.
• Conducts scheduled preventive maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
• Repairs lighting systems on vehicles.
• Inspects and repairs fuel systems on vehicles, including repairing carburetors and fuel injectors.
• Inspects and repairs air-conditioning systems, including repairing Freon leaks, compressor lines, wires, evaporator cores, and compressor components.
• Inspects and repairs heating systems, including repairing heater lines and cores.
• Performs major and minor engine repairs, including repairing pumping and electrical systems.
• Manages the departmental work order system; orders and stores parts and delegates repair tasks.
• Performs emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary; troubleshoots equipment failures at job sites.
• Maintains the shop and assigned tools.
• Completes and signs work orders according to service rendered.
• Repair, overhaul and maintain a variety of fire department equipment and vehicles.
• Inspect assigned equipment; diagnose noise, electrical and mechanical problems and determine the extent of repairs.
• Perform preventative maintenance duties as needed; maintain work area for cleanliness and safety.
• Maintain, troubleshoot and repair air, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems; maintain and repair components in fire pump system.
• Repair, overhaul, tune and adjust a variety of diesel and gas engines, transmissions, pumps and valves of assigned equipment.
• Design and fabricate specialized equipment; perform welding, replace or rebuild needed parts and equipment; weld and fabricate parts, as necessary.
• Respond to emergency calls for assistance; travel to sites as necessary, to assist others or transport vehicles and equipment; drive and operate equipment at emergencies.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Maintain records of maintenance, test and work performed on a computer-based system.
• Additional duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of fire department equipment and vehicles.
• Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
• Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of engines.
• Knowledge of equipment modification and rebuild techniques.
• Knowledge of metal fabrication and welding.
• Knowledge of NFPA and DOT standards as they pertain to vehicle maintenance.
