Role Description 

The San Francisco SPCA imagines a community where all pet guardians will have access to quality care for their pets. Reporting into the Chief Medical Officer, the Hospital Medical Director/Lead Veterinarian/Lead Veterinarian is a highly motivated, clinically skilled, dynamic leader, passionate about innovating and optimizing the quality and delivery of veterinary services of our full-service, general practice Mission Campus Veterinary Hospital. The Medical Director/Lead Veterinarian will be passionate about building high performing, collaborative teams of approximately ten (10) Veterinarians and forty (40) technicians with the support of two Nursing Care Managers.  

This hands-on leadership position is responsible for advancing and implementing the medical strategy and protocols defined by the Chief Medical Officer. The SF SPCA Veterinary Hospital is also supported by a Senior Director of Clinical Operations with whom the Medical Director/Lead Veterinarian will work hand-in-hand to ensure quality medical and patient care are considered in all operational efficiencies, yet the Medical Director/Lead Veterinarian position is largely removed from operations, so their focus remains on medicine and clinical team development. 

The San Francisco SPCA Veterinary Hospital provides wellness, general practice, urgent care services, surgery, dental, and advanced diagnostics. Supported by a full in-house nursing team, our veterinarians have the trained medical support required for a high-volume hospital seeing over 25,000 visits per year. As a nonprofit organization, we are uniquely positioned in the community and provide financial assistance and surgical grants to pet guardians in need. 

Core Responsibilities 

Leadership and Veterinary Medical Care 

• Partner with the Chief Medical Officer, Senior Director of Hospital Operations and other leaders across the organization to guide and implement SF SPCA Hospital goals and vision to maintain a sustainable financial model. 
• Provide leadership for the changing landscape in veterinary care and the anticipated on-going DVM storage. 
• Cultivate and lead a collaborative hospital team, instilling a strong sense of belonging, commitment, and passion. 
• Provide leadership, oversight, and medical guidance on a wide variety of medical and surgical cases, including development and implementation of incremental care plans when appropriate. 
• Provide guidance for case selection and oversight of the hospital’s financial assistance program to ensure that impact of funds are maximized and managed to budget in partnership with Hospital Operations & Administration. 
• Design, update, and implement medical protocol/standards of care for the hospital, working with the nursing team to develop and implement medical standard operating procedures and protocols. 
• Partner with the Clinical Operations leaders to ensure the hospital is in full compliance with all state and federal laws and accreditation requirements regarding the practice of veterinary medicine, controlled substances, and animal welfare. Participate in strategic planning, annual departmental budget & goal setting, and implementation of the organization’s vision. 
• Partner with Community Medicine, Behvaior Medicine and Shelter Medicine leaders to establish standards of veterinary medical care for all public clients and ensure consistency of approach. 
• Foster teamwork and communication across the organization, ensuring the hospital programs are working effectively with all departments. 
• Represent the organization publicly, advancing our reputation as a partner and leader.
