The Office of International Services (OIS) is seeking a Sr. Associate Director of OIS for New Students and Client Education. Reporting to the Director for International Students, this position provides senior leadership and strategic policy and practice development related to international students and scholars as a member of the OIS leadership team. The Sr. Associate Director works closely with the Director for International Students to plan, develop, and execute strategic and operational plans and policies that align with the broad goals of OIS and the University. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, and Student and Exchange Visitor Program regulations and recommendations. The Sr. Associate Director provides strategic planning around advising for F-1 Students and Exchange Visitors and serves as the direct manager for the OIS professional advising staff and is responsible for supervision, mentorship, and professional development. In addition, this position serves as a Designated School Official for the F-1 program and as Alternate Responsible Officer for the J-1 program.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership & Compliance Oversight
- In conjunction with Associate Vice Provost for International Student and Scholar Services, develops and executes strategies for the unit; participates in strategic planning as part of OIS leadership team.
- Senior functional lead for all office processes and advising related to incoming and newly arrived students. Monitors for issues requiring attention and manages relevant SUNAPSIS alerts. Ensures consistency in the team's student advising practices and addresses inconsistencies at team and individual meetings.
- Senior functional lead for international student education and programming on topics such as pre-arrival, orientation, living and studying in the U.S., maintaining F-1/J-1 status, F-1/J-1 employment benefits, and culture shock and adaptation.
- Provides expert, competent, and professional service to international students at all JHU schools concerning complex U.S. immigration laws governing and/or regulating their stay in the U.S.
- Monitors changes in immigration law and develops strategic planning around regulation communication and implementation. Develops policy and procedures as needed to ensure University compliance. Develops and implements communication strategies to inform all OIS partners of compliance-driven changes to processes.
- Serves as senior member of OIS Student Team. Functions as Designated School Office for all JHU F-1 Student Programs and maintains active registration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to function in this capacity.
- Prepares and Provides training sessions as needed for campus partners.
- Oversees OIS website content related to new students and OIS programming for students. Provides content edits to OIS website team when necessary.
- Advises on J-1 Student matters as necessary. Functions as Alternate Responsible Office for JHU J-1 Exchange Visitor Program and maintains active registration with the Department of State to function in this capacity.
Outreach
- Builds and maintains strong and positive relationships with deans, faculty, and campus administrators at the University. Provides functional advice to schools, departments, divisions, and affiliates, as it relates to student services.
- Represents OIS in activities related to university-wide initiatives.
- Assists in the development and implementation of formal office policies and procedures and disseminates that information to affected parties, including the international students, faculty, and staff.
- Manages special projects as assigned.
Supervision
- Provides leadership and direct supervision International Service Advisors.
- Thoroughly understands, determines, and supervises staff workload and ensures it is aligned with and meeting office expectations, demands, and needs.
- Recruits, trains, evaluates, and mentors staff; encourages professional development.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree or equivalent required.
- Additional experience may be substituted for education.
- Knowledge of procedures for employment, change of visa status, reinstatement, and other complex F and J authorizations and processes.
- Must be U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident to meet regulatory requirements as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer.
- Must be willing to travel to participate in professional meetings and conferences.
- Five years of related experience and familiarity with international education in general.
