Job Description Summary

Our team handles some of the most unique and interesting insurance claims at Nationwide. Do you have deep insurance industry knowledge, good negotiation skills and understand litigation? If you like variety in your work, have desire to collaborate and bring fair resolution to sophisticated specialty claims, we want to hear from you!

As a Director, you'll lead Nationwide Indemnity specialty claims operation such as environmental, sexual molestation or asbestos. We'll count on you to ensure the best possible measures are taken to minimize claims liability.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures review and approval of all coverage decisions and all settlements.

  • Negotiates claims for settlements up to $30.0M.

  • Support major business initiatives that drive Nationwide Indemnity organizational strategies.

  • Works with Actuarial to identify short and long-term trends to forecast claims payouts, both in terms of timing amounts.

  • Partners with industry leaders to help promote beneficial industry and legislative changes.

  • Establishes unit goals which are consistent with Nationwide Indemnity goals, mission and objectives. Responsible for achieving goals.

  • Delivers an outstanding customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.

  • Resolves customer complaints according to optimal practices. Monitors customer satisfaction in an effort to drive action plans for improvement.

  • Identifies, develops and retains associates who have the potential for or are ready to fill critical roles in the organization.

  • Directs associate management, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President, Specialty Claims. Leader of a team of specialty claim professionals.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree or post-graduate studies preferred. 

License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Studies toward professional designations, such as ARE, CPCU, IIA, and/or AEI preferred. 

Experience: Ten years of related claims experience preferred; legal background beneficial. Management experience required. 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of property casualty claims with emphasis on environmental claims. Relevant professional designations highly desirable. Demonstrated decision-making skills including the ability to negotiate, analyze and approve claims settlements. Ability to lead and manage staff in all aspects of claims operations. Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide outstanding service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Ability to develop business strategies that support Nationwide initiatives. 

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
