The Yard Supervisor is responsible for full operational oversight of a yard service account at a customer distribution center, including leadership of yard drivers and coordinators. This role ensures safe and efficient trailer movements, accurate yard inventories, compliant operations, strong customer communication and centricity, and high-performing teams. Core Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Yard Flow
- Oversee daily yard activities including trailer spotting, dock moves, staging, and shuttle moves, ensuring alignment with customer building/yard operations.
- Operate effectively at accounts where the customer has a varying level of ownership over move requests, dock schedules, and trailer reconciliation—acting as a support partner where needed to ensure drivers and coordinators execute the plan safely and on time.
- Coordinate closely with customer departments to prioritize move requests that meet production goals, appointment schedules, and on-time performance.
- Continuously monitor yard flow to prevent congestion; recommend and implement adjustments with the customer operations team.
- Conduct routine yard checks to validate trailer inventory conditions and highlight discrepancies or safety hazards to customer teams; assist with reconciling YMS/move logs when requested.
- Support drop lot capacity planning, trailer pool balance, and yard organization by providing data and recommendations to customer stakeholders, as requested.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns, delays, weather impacts, and operational disruptions; escalate and communicate promptly to customer and internal leaders.
- Maintain clear communication with warehouse leadership, transportation planning, maintenance, and security across both customer and internal stakeholders.
- Shift Practices — Operations
- Start-of-shift: review prior-shift performance, open issues, truck/trailer status, and staffing; align with customer on priorities.
- Mid-shift: monitor YMS data/boards provided by the customer, yard conditions, and execution; adjust assignments to keep flow balanced.
- End-of-shift: complete turnover notes with results, open items, equipment defects, and next-shift priorities for both internal and customer partners.
People Leadership & Development
- Lead shift huddles to align the team on safety, priorities, service expectations, and metrics.
- Assign daily tasks to drivers and coordinators as needed; verify staffing, attendance, and coverage while managing overtime appropriately.
- Conduct routine observations of drivers and coordinators for safety, productivity, and process adherence; provide timely coaching and recognition.
- Support onboarding, training, cross-training, and skill development; close training gaps promptly when hazards or errors are identified.
- Develop coordinators through task ownership, small projects, and leadership opportunities.
- Build a positive culture with strong communication, teamwork, and accountability across shifts.
Shift Practices — People
Perform PPE checks, safety audits, and driver/coordinator observations throughout each shift.
Deliver on-the-spot coaching for unsafe or high-performing behaviors; document as required.
