The Maintenance Mechanic / Pipe Welder reports to the site's Maintenance Supervisor and specializes in welding.  They will be responsible for the inspection, evaluation, repair and installation of new and existing piping and equipment in the plant.  You will perform general mechanical inspections and repairs, but will also serve in a leading role for any required welding activities.  In this role, you will directly impact the safety and reliability of an operating chemical plant.  To accomplish this role, you will interact and consult with other employees like Maintenance Mechanics, Electrical & Instrumentation Technicians, Maintenance Planners, Reliability / Process / Project Engineers, Chemical Operators, and all levels of plant supervision.    

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs welding for mechanical equipment, structural and piping applications, including SMAW (Stick), MIG, and TIG methods; equipment metallurgies will include carbon steel, stainless steels, and aluminum
  • Leads and assists in the fabrication, construction, installation, and modification of new, existing and customized equipment throughout the facility
  • Determines finalized pipe routing, fit up dimensions, and support requirements for a variety of industrial piping
  • Safely performs preventive and predictive maintenance and repair of all industrial equipment associated with the operation of the facility and production of chemicals
  • Leads and assists in equipment troubleshooting for mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Performs general carpentry and metal fabrication work with a variety of materials
  • Performs equipment lubrication tasks with oils, greases, filters, pumps, and other advanced tools (ultrasonic tool)
  • Performs basic facility maintenance tasks including cleaning, sweeping, and occasional snow removal and salting
  • Operates or works with forklifts and other heavy equipment (telehandler, boom truck / crane, skid steer, etc...) 
  • The Maintenance Mechanic is also expected to perform other reasonably related maintenance and business duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Site Engineering Staff and Site Management.

 

Minimum Requirements – Experience / Education / Skills and Training

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • 3+ years’ experience welding carbon steel and stainless steel process or power piping
  • 3+ years’ skilled industrial maintenance experience in a chemical plant
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent math, reading comprehension, and problem solving skills
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Ability to follow departmental practices, procedures and safety guidelines
  • Ability to safely work independently and in a team setting
  • Ability to work overtime including weekends, holidays and call-ins.
  • Familiarity with ISO procedures, plumbing, millwrighting, rigging, rotating/stationary equipment repair, metal fabrication, insulating, and reading prints/diagrams preferred.

 

Preferred Requirements

  • Associate’s degree, diploma, or certificate in Welding Technology (or similar), including pipe welding
  • Associate’s degree, diploma, or certificate in Industrial Maintenance programs (or similar)
  • Experience ASME / NBIC code welding, boiler and pressure vessel repair, or AWS / CWI weld inspection
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations including Lock Out Tag Out, Hot Work, and Confined Space Entry
  • Experience with isometric, plan, elevation, or other layout related engineering drawings for piping fabrication
  • Experience with air-operated diaphragm, centrifugal, positive displacement, and other pumps
  • Experience with mechanical seals and seal pots for rotating equipment
  • Experience with reactors, storage tanks, agitators, and materials handling equipment
  • Experience operating or maintaining
