About the role

Summary

The Advisor, Strategy and Operations (ASO) provides leadership and humanitarian representation for change projects impacting the SCUS humanitarian portfolio and team, and works closely with the Head of Humanitarian Response and other humanitarian team leaders. 

As a member of the DHR Senior Leadership Team, the ASO will actively champion a culture of continuous learning and business process improvement. They will anticipate internal and/or external business challenges, lead and/or oversee the development of standard operating procedures, and promote a culture of knowledge sharing and management, in order to ensure that SCUS teams are prepared for roll out and uptake of strategy and change projects.  

The ASO will also provide support and leadership to ensure the smooth functioning of the DHR and Humanitarian Senior Leadership Teams, promoting effective team communication and staff engagement.  The ASO will serve as the DHR/HBT focal point for agency strategic planning and reporting requirements.  

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

DHR Operations (50%) 

  • Organize and prioritize critical issues and information to facilitate efficient and timely decisions within DHR.  
  • Represent DHR in agency-wide project leadership.  
    • Actively lead new hire onboarding process for the department, as well as retention, leadership development, succession planning to meet strategic goals.  
  • Actively lead and manage DHRs professional development budget and trainings.  
  • Alongside the HPP and HFC, monitor performance and use data to provide regular analysis against department annual objectives and make recommendations for strategic improvements.  
  • Plan, manage and lead internal meetings, retreats and communications for the Department of Humanitarian Response. 
  • Directly responsible for DHR SLT meetings, working with Head of Humanitarian Response to ensure timely decisions, learnings, track key issues and information flows.  
  • Manage Global Emergency Humanitarian Surge Platform for SCUS.  
  •  Ensure good understanding of HR practices relevant to DHR including systems for hiring consultants and temporary staff. Manage DHR participation in the internship program. 

Management (20%)   

  •  Train, develop, coach, lead, and supervise DHR Sr. Associate, clearly communicating organization, division and department priorities, and how their work contributes to our mission, ensuring that the working environment continually fosters diversity, inclusion, and belonging – supporting Save the Children values
  •  Ensure DHR Sr. Associate time, and LOE are balanced across the department
  •  Support DHR Sr. Associate ensuring departments knowledge management and intranet structure are user friendly
  •  Identify growth opportunities for Sr. Associate and manage their surge requests

 Training (10%)

  • Oversee SCUS contribution to humanitarian capacity-building efforts, identifying  resources, provision of training and effective engagement in SC-wide humanitarian capacity-building strategy and implementation. 
  • Ensure that there are effective tools and plans in place to ensure capacity-building opportunities for members of the SCUS Humanitarian Business Team (HBT) including mandatory training such as hostile environment awareness training (HEAT). 
  • Ensure that new employees receive onboarding training to prepare them for their role. 
  •  Liaise with other IP business teams to ensure DHR is included in relevant trainings. 
  • Create training strategies, initiatives, and materials for department and team trainings.  

Knowledge Management (10%) 

  • Responsible for DHR knowledge management, including SCUS internal systems, and coordinate across IP and SCI in knowledge sharing and collaboration. 
  • Gather and analyze information to determine department and individual learning needs.
