Structural Steel QA Technician

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a dynamic, analytical problem-solver to join our team as a Structural Steel Quality Assurance Technician! In this role, you will perform specialized testing, sampling, and inspections of structural steel, welding, and coatings within our roadways—transforming raw material data into actionable quality assurance to ensure safe, long-lasting state infrastructure! If you have an eye for detail and a strong understanding of required structural documentation, you will play a critical role in keeping Utah moving safely!

Responsibilities

  • Inspection of structural steel fabrication and structural coating applications to ensure that products incorporated into UDOT projects meet contract plans and specifications.
  • Perform quality assurance and independent assurance testing and inspections.
  • Interpret plans and specifications to assure compliance with standards and contract specific requirements.
  • Advise engineers of technical problems with suggested solutions.

 

Qualifications

 

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the following fields:

 

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • ASNT Ultrasonic Testing Level I-II
  • ASNT Magnetic Particle Level I-II
  • ASNT Radiographic Film Interpretation/Testing Level I-II
  • ASNT Dye Penetrant Testing Level I-II
  • AGA Galvanizing Inspection
  • Structural Bolting
  • AMPP Bridge Coatings Inspectors (BCI or equivalent)
  • Successfully completed Transportation Education Program (TEP) Level IV or T3 yr 4 or National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level IV Materials or Construction and 4 years of experience in the construction or materials testing fields and/or a combination of directly related education and/or experience.
  • ability to identify quality products and those not meeting the requirements of the standard plans and specifications.
  • ability to research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information.
  • knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.
  • knowledge of agency objectives, organization, structure and mission.
  • ability to use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions.
  • ability to read and interpret maps, charts, plans, and/or blueprints.
  • ability to read and interpret data from scientific instruments or equipment.
