Position Summary:
The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan University is seeking a laboratory technician for the Clinical Laboratory to join our new veterinary program and small animal teaching hospital. The selected candidate will be integral in delivering patient test results within our new small animal teaching hospital, currently under construction in Harrison Township, NJ. The hospital is designed to accommodate multiple specialty departments including anesthesia, cardiology, clinical pathology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging (with GE 128-slice CT and GE 3T MRI), emergency/critical care, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, primary care, radiology, surgery, and a full clinical laboratory and pharmacy with sterile compounding capabilities.
This position supports an important clinical service in the veterinary teaching hospital and significantly contributes to both client satisfaction and revenue generation. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting the growth and development of a clinical pathology laboratory. They will learn to perform all available in-house laboratory tests, execute quality control and quality assurance programs for all in-house clinical laboratory tests and assist in the development and implementation of laboratory technician training, laboratory SOPs and laboratory workflows. Our top priorities include delivering excellent patient diagnostic testing in a dependable and timely manner and offering excellent client satisfaction.
Successful candidates will preferably have demonstrated familiarity and skill with performing various laboratory tests and QA/QC programming in a laboratory setting and will be familiar with a variety of analyzers utilized by high-throughput diagnostic labs. They will also understand the critical importance of quality diagnostics for our veterinary patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:
- Participates in the overall daily operations of the clinical laboratory. This includes sample accessioning, patient sample testing, charge entry, daily maintenance, and setup of laboratory analyzers.
- Participates in daily workflow and workflow design to maximize effective use of personnel, equipment, resources, and materials.
- Evaluates workflow and suggests staffing reallocation to various areas, as needed, to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
- Collaborates with other lab personnel to develop and implement training programs for other laboratory technicians and/or administrative staff.
- Is receptive to learning and utilizing skills such as open communication, feedback, and conflict mitigation strategies to develop and maintain a collegial lab dynamic.
- Participates in and helps develop a system to assure completion of daily assignments by staff prior to leaving for the day.
- Performs all responsibilities in accordance with applicable existing regulations (e.g., OSHA)
- Ensures that the lab is maintained in a professional and orderly manner
- Recommends new or revised lab policies and procedures that may benefit lab efficiency and accuracy. These include, but are not limited to, processes that (1) decrease sample turnaround times, (2) optimize workflow, (3) ensure sample-submitter satisfaction, (4) optimize diagnostic test quality and/or reporting.
Administrative Duties:
- Maintains inventory and assists with or directly orders supplies and equipment in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Expedites and coordinates services such as calibrations and maintenance of equipment as suggested by the manufacturer and ensures equipment is ready for patient sample analysis.
- Maintains disaster consumable storage plan, if applicable.
- Maintains or assists in maintaining all necessary records in accordance with federal, state, university, and departmental regulations and policies.
General Responsibilities:
- Completes all training assignments.
- Supports and adheres to university policies.

- Associate degree or two-year college equivalent. Applicants lacking the degree may substitute appropriate related experience on a year-to-year basis.
