Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Warren Tech Center on a full-time basis.

The Role

The General Motors Global Robotics and Vision Applications Standards team is on the lookout for a highly skilled Manufacturing Engineer passionate about developing, maintaining, and supporting global robotic vision applications and standards for manufacturing automation systems.

In this senior engineering role, you will be responsible for designing, building, and troubleshooting cutting-edge robotic systems and technologies, while also providing support for existing manufacturing applications.

You will leverage your technical expertise to collaborate effectively with Execution, R&D, Safety, and Controls Standards teams, driving the standardization of innovative robotic guidance and process applications.

As a Senior Robotics Vision Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing new technologies and promoting simple, safe solutions within our manufacturing processes.

What You'll Do

  • Analyze manufacturing system requirements to design effective robotic vision applications.

  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering (ME) departments, R&D, Safety, and both regional and global automation teams to gather feedback and document manufacturing needs.

  • Liaise with vision equipment and integration suppliers to ensure optimal solutions.

  • Develop comprehensive hardware and software designs for robotic vision systems, including vision devices, power distribution, I/O networks, and cost estimation tools.

  • Ensure that robotic vision application designs adhere to GCCH, GCCS, and Global Robot Standards.

  • Oversee detailed designs by contractors as needed to maintain quality and compliance.

  • Define specifications for robotic vision system components, functional requirements, and integration methods.

  • Assess and validate new vision technologies for implementation in manufacturing facilities.

  • Provide on-site and remote technical support for plant vision issues, new equipment startups, troubleshooting, reprogramming, diagnostic equipment usage, and collaboration with skilled trades personnel.

  • Deliver training and documentation to facilitate the global deployment of standardized robotic vision systems.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years' experience in deploying robots within manufacturing systems

  • 5+ years' experience with the setup and programming of Fanuc robots

  • Proficient in designing, setting up, and debugging vision systems for robot guidance, error proofing, or part quality assurance

  • Proficient in Karel and Fanuc TP programming

  • Experience working with a variety of 2D and 3D vision sensors

  • Strong understanding of robotics concepts, including kinematics, dynamics, and control

  • Capable of managing multiple complex projects and assignments with a high degree of autonomy

  • Willingness to travel occasionally within North America and globally to OEMs and plant sites

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) 

  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python, C, C++, and Java

  • Experienced with Linux, Bash, and Git for version control and development

  • Knowledgeable in ROS/ROS2 (Robot Operating System) packages and deployment

  • Familiar with working with Docker containers for application deployment

  • Experience in applying AI and machine learning techniques in robotics applications

  • Familiarity with developing solutions for mobile robots, including mapping and obstacle avoidance

  • Familiarity with developing GM Global Common Standards (GCCH, GCCS, GRS)

  • AIA Certified Vision Professional – Bas
