UNIT DESCRIPTION:
The Birthplace is a 12-bed, private room, labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum unit that includes a nursery staffed by obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, pediatricians, neonatologists and registered nurses. The Unit also has a 2 bed triage and 6 bed postpartum area. Registered nurses are required to demonstrate competent care of the patient in labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn advanced fetal monitoring, breastfeeding education, neonatal resuscitation certification, advanced life support certification, and the OR scrub and circulating roles.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assess physical status of patient using age-appropriate knowledge.
- Plans, evaluates, and supervises care of all patients assigned.
- Works collaboratively with other disciplines in care of patients.
- Participates in formal and informal educational programs to improve technical skills.
- Responsible for continued learning and application to practice.
- Synthesizes patient care information to formulate appropriate nursing diagnosis.
- Responsible to provide newborn and family education.
- Work practice reflects philosophy purpose and policies of the hospital department.
- Demonstrates knowledge and competence in care of the newborn using appropriate treatments, therapies and clinical interventions.
- Responds to physical and psychological needs of high-risk mother/baby.
- Maintains current Neonatal Resuscitation Certification.
- Demonstrates knowledge of standards of care for mothers and newborns.

Minimum Requirements:
- Current Massachusetts RN license
- Labor and Delivery experience required
- Mother/Baby experience required
- AHA BLS and ACLS certifications required upon hire
- NRP required
- Evidence of recent AWHONN EFM continuing education
Recommended Requirements:
- OR Circulating & Scrub experience preferred
- Experience working in continuing care/special care nursery/NICU environment preferred
