About the role

Cleveland Metroparks is seeking applicants to work with the Aquatic Research & Management program and assist with stream assessments, fisheries management, and other aquatic resource management projects throughout the Park District. This position reports to the Aquatic Biologist at the Rocky River Management Center, Rocky River Reservation, but will work at sites across Cleveland Metroparks. The position duration will range from 3-6 months (up to 400 hours).

  • Assists with stream habitat assessments using standardized Ohio EPA protocols.
  • Samples and identifies aquatic macroinvertebrates, salamanders, and fish.
  • Performs aquatic resource management, including invasive species control, nuisance weed management, and habitat enhancement/restoration.
  • Performs fisheries management, including community assessments, sportfish stocking, and electrofishing.
  • Works in aquatic environments, including wading in streams/rivers and working from small watercraft.
Qualifications
  • College-level coursework in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Energy and enthusiasm for field work, prior field/outdoor work experience (including personal recreation or volunteer work) is encouraged.
  • Positive disposition and ability to work well and communicate with a diverse team.
  • Responsible attitude, work ethic, and initiative.
  • Physically able to work long hours outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of natural areas typical of northeast Ohio (including heat, humidity, poison ivy, and biting/stinging insects).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe, efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment for oneself, co-workers, and the public.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required, must be prepared to work a flexible schedule.

Work Schedule: Typically a Monday-Friday schedule, with occasional evening and weekend opportunities. Schedule is weather-dependent and may be highly variable, 20-40 hours per week from May - September (depending on candidate availability)
