Associate Director, UME Instructional Design and Learning Technology

About the role

SUMMARY:

The Associate Director - UME Instructional Design & Learning Technology collaborates closely with executive leadership, UME personnel, course directors, and subject matter experts to identify and implement innovative instructional technologies that support the educational infrastructure across the UME portfolio. This role oversees the management of instructional designers and learning technology specialists across multiple campuses, ensuring the effective utilization of educational technology resources. The Associate Director assists the faculty-level Director of Learning Technologies and Directors of UME Curriculum and Ops in supporting the MD-program's educational initiatives and maintains a presence on all relevant campuses. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Lead strategic planning in conjunction with UME leadership in the development and implementation of instructional design initiatives and learning technology solutions.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership and academic stakeholders to align instructional design strategies with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Serve as a key advisor on best practices in instructional design, learning technologies, and emerging trends in medical education. 
  • Oversee the design, development, and continuous improvement of the UME curriculum, incorporating innovative instructional strategies and technologies. 
  • Lead the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards related to instructional design and learning technology.
  • Manage and mentor a team of instructional designers and learning technology professionals across multiple campuses.
  • Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to team members to enhance their skills and capabilities.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that promotes creativity, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and solid technological skills in adult learning methodologies, instructional design principles and commonly used e-learning tools/platforms e.g. Learning Space, Canvas, Zoom, WebEx, Vimeo, Turning Point, and MS Office Suite.
  • Exhibits initiative, innovation and creativity in the medical education space.
  • Evaluate emerging instructional technologies and recommend their integration into teaching and learning practices.
  • Ensure the effective integration of learning technologies, multimedia resources, and instructional tools into curriculum design and delivery.
  • Develops, communicates, and implements departmental standards for creating content accessibility across platforms and devices.
  • Establish and maintain quality assurance processes and standards for instructional design and learning technology initiatives.
  • Conduct regular assessments and evaluations to measure the effectiveness and impact of instructional design strategies and technologies.
  • Implement data-driven approaches to improve instructional design practices and enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with academic faculty, subject matter experts, and instructional support teams to identify learning needs, develop instructional materials, and implement effective teaching strategies.
  • Serve as a liaison between academic departments, administrative units, and external partners to facilitate collaboration and communication on instructional design and technology-related initiatives.
  • Represent the organization in professional networks, conferences, and industry events to stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in instructional design and learning technology.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in educational technology, education, instructional design, information technology, or a related field is strongly preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in instructional design, learning technologies, or related roles, with demonstrated leadership experience. Candidates should have direct experience managing teams and possess knowledge of medical terminology and clinical procedures. 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, education technology, instructional technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in instructional design, learning technologies, or related roles, with demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design theories, principles and best practices.
  • Proficiency in learning management systems, educational technologies, multimedia authoring tools, and digital learning resources.
