Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Enrichment Technology Technician who will focus on supporting research associated with the conceptualization, development, and deployment of enrichment technologies and systems. This position resides in the R&D Demonstration Group in the Enrichment Systems Fabrication and Demonstration Section, Enrichment Science and Engineering Division, Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring enriched stable isotope production applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists, engineers, and technicians with world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

As part of our team, you will work with other technicians, engineers, quality representatives, project managers, and other project staff to demonstrate the advancement of enrichment technologies. This position requires a balanced skillset across mechanical and dynamics system operations, process gas operations, ability to work to procedures and in research mode, and the troubleshooting of new technologies.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Execute enrichment experiments in accordance with policies and procedures

  • Obtain Lead Operator qualification

  • Monitor and perform trending analysis of experimental parameters

  • Utilize HMI and field controls to operate test bed support systems to include, but not limited to, process gas, vacuum, cryogenic, chilled water, thermal, mechanical, and electrical distribution

  • Respond to system or unit abnormalities, diagnose the cause, and recommend or take corrective action

  • Utilize precision mechanical test and inspection equipment to verify component/system performance and integrity

  • Participate with installation, troubleshooting, replacement, decommissioning of systems and components

  • Maintain experimental data and log book records related to enrichment operations.

  • Support the development and review of procedures, instructions, reports, presentations, and qualifications

  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values, ethics, and vision

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS or AAS degree in chemical, mechanical, nuclear, industrial engineering technology, and a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience OR a High School Diploma and a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered

  • Experience with reactive gas systems, cryogenic systems/components, vacuum systems/components, HMI/PLC controlled systems/components, instrumentation, and associated mechanical and inspection equipment (e.g., leak detectors, RGA’s, etc.)

  • Familiar with office automation tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases)

  • Inherent ambition to demonstrate the preferred ethical behaviors (e.g., integrity, honesty, accountability, trust, etc.)

  • Proven communication skills, both written and oral

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.

  • Willingness to work shift work, flexible hours, and overtime as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q clearance

  • Successful completion of the U.S Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program

  • Experience with DOE O 422.1, Conduct of Operations

  • Experience with DOE safety, security, and regulatory requirements

  • NQA-1 or ISO-9000 Quality experience

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
