ABOUT THE CENTER:

The Child Study Center, a campus-based laboratory preschool, offers a play based, emergent curriculum designed to nurture children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. To this end, we offer a modified, open-structured classroom concept in which the schedule, routines, staff, classroom activity areas, and presentation of materials are highly organized but flexible enough to meet the individual needs of each developing child within the context of the whole group. We carefully and thoughtfully construct aesthetically pleasing learning environments and experiences to tap into children’s curiosity, engage the whole child, and maintain a balanced, safe, healthy learning environment. We encourage the involvement of families and strengthening the relationships between children, families, and community.

The philosophy that is the cornerstone of our core beliefs is that children are inherently good and capable. Although all children follow their individual developmental trajectory, there are certain patterns of development that follow a predictable sequence and both the environment and support from skillful teachers can exert tremendous influence on the child’s development. Through their play, children expand their imagination, extend their creativity, and develop problem solving skills. Play provides opportunities for children to navigate social relationships, test hypotheses about materials, develop spatial awareness, practice maintaining attention, and extend critical thinking skills. Play is the work of the child! 

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Design, prepare, manage, and maintain a world-class, model preschool environment at the Child Study Center and at the research lab at the Science Center. Represent Wellesley College and the Child Study Center to current and prospective parents, professional colleagues, and the general public. Classroom management and curriculum planning as designated to implement developmentally appropriate practices that support children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs. Support and maintain high-quality standards in indoor/outdoor laboratory preschool classrooms.  

This is an Academic Year position, Late August – Late June

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm

Salary range will be provided upon receipt of application.

Responsibilities include:

• Develop relationships with up to 16 children in the classroom and, to a lesser extent, with all children in the school.

• Meet the individual and group needs of the children in care.

• Counsel, advise, and confer with parents, local school systems, outside agencies, and early childhood specialists.

• Establish and maintain relationships of cooperation and respect with co-workers, supervisors, children, and families.

• Interface with Wellesley College Faculty, Student Teachers, Student Researchers, Parents, and Caregivers, demonstrating expertise in child development and early childhood education.

• Facilitate cutting-edge classroom observations for more than 5000 annual visits from Professors and students, parents, and visitors.

• Help design and facilitate Faculty & Student research, both at the Child Study Center and the Science Center.

• Train and supervise other classroom teachers, including Assistant Teachers, Team Teachers, Student Interns, Student Teachers, and volunteers.

• Develop, organize, and design creative, exemplary outdoor and indoor curriculum and environments.

• Evaluate and document classroom activities and children’s behavior.

• Lead daily team meetings and designated staff, planning, clinical consultant, parent education, and other ad hoc meetings.
