General Purpose of Job:

The Credit/Refund Specialist oversees the accurate evaluation of and completion of insurance refund requests in accordance with State and Federal reimbursement guidelines, along with review of patient overpayments and refunds.  Duties include but are not limited to ensuring accurate insurance payment evaluation and refund requests, assistance with credit accounts: review and determination, and providing assistance to the payment poster.

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and departmental procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines. 
  • Review of insurance requests regarding overpayments and coordinating refunds to payers.
  • Assistance to the payment poster resolving discrepancies on patient and insurance balances.
  • Serves as a backup to payment poster position.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of security and confidentiality of data and information.
  • Maintains a calm, professional demeanor at all times.
  • Effectively demonstrates DCH’s philosophy, values, and mission as evidenced by interactions with others.
  • Maintains and ensures confidentiality of patient records at all times.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with Epic software preferred.
  • Ability to spell medical terminology accurately.
  • Ability to type 60WPM.
  • Prior experience working in a medical billing office preferred.
