Public Safety Officer

Unlimited, Full Time

Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM; On-campus

Salary Range:     Hourly from $23.61 to $32.54; Annually from $49,298 to $67,944

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Public Safety Officer position exists to create and maintain a welcoming, safe and secure environment at Normandale Community College. The position maintains a high level of public relations and effective communications with campus community members while performing routine Public Safety duties in accordance with established guidelines, including: patrolling assigned areas to ensure personal, building, and equipment security; educating students, staff, faculty and visitors about rules and policies; warning violators of rule infractions; applying traffic and parking ordinances, laws, and college policies; responding to campus and medical emergencies; completing required recordkeeping; and performing dispatch duties as needed. Provides training and work direction to student workers in the Public Safety Department.

This position will actively advance the college’s strategic goals, including achieving equity in educational outcomes and supporting a culturally responsive and service-oriented culture, through individual and departmental efforts.  

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

ESSENTIAL: These qualifications are required to move forward; as such, (ensure your application contains descriptions of your education and work experience sufficient to demonstrate competency in each of the following):

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a Security Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, or Peace Officer.

  • Associate's degree in Law Enforcement, Paralegal or related field may substitute for 1 year of experience; Bachelor’s degree in above areas may substitute for 2 years of experience.

PREFERRED:

  • Ability and commitment to collaborate and develop effective relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and at different levels in the college. 

  • Proven ability to provide customer service using good human relations skills to interact with others (common courtesy, tact, interest in positive problem resolution, empathy and logical organization of ideas).

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, employees and the general public.

  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of private information according to laws, rules, policies and procedures.

  • Experience working in a Public Safety or Campus Security office on a college or university campus.

  • Possess current Minnesota EMSRB certification for either Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technical (EMT).

  • Oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to problem solve and find acceptable solutions when needed.

  • Ability to interpret, explain and enforce state laws, Bloomington city ordinances, and Minnesota State/College policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of standard police practices including investigation techniques and procedures, use of force guidelines, citizen’s arrest power and loss prevention techniques.

  • Experience working with fire alarms, access control and CCTV surveillance systems, and computer software controlling these systems.
