The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) will be responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, tuning, securing, and upgrading mission critical database systems for world class compliance and data archival solutions. This role requires advanced knowledge and deep experience with MS SQL Server versions 2016 and newer in a highly transactional and extremely large database environment. The Senior DBA will serve as a subject matter expert in database operations while collaborating with other development and engineering teams across the globe. In this role, the Senior DBA will also function as a project lead for database-centric projects.
Experience with traditional SQL Server Clusters, AlwaysOn Availability Groups, Log Shipping, and Transactional Replication is required for the role. Knowledge of Dell tools and infrastructure including PowerEdge, PowerMax, PowerStore, DataDomain, and DDBoost preferred. Familiarity with other RDBMS such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MariaDB is a plus. Working knowledge of NoSQL systems and/or Cloud technologies is also a plus, but not essential.  

Essential Functions

  • Manage and maintain all production and non-production SQL Server database systems across multiple environments with more than 2 petabytes of total data.
  • Leverage subject matter expertise to optimize and enhance multi-terabyte databases deployed in existing traditional SQL Server Clusters and AlwaysOn Availability Groups.
  • Design, implement, and maintain next generation high-availability and disaster recovery solutions for very large SQL Server environments.    
  • Proactively monitor all database systems to determine appropriate preventive actions to ensure high availability, security, and optimal performance.
  • Collaborate regularly with application and platform engineers to maintain and enhance existing applications and infrastructure.
  • Assist with identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving T-SQL performance issues.   
  • Develop and maintain runbooks while also automating recurring tasks via T-SQL, PowerShell, and other scripting languages.
  • Assist with strategic planning to continue scaling, improving, and evolving Smarsh’s data platforms.   
  • Evaluate and test new and emerging database tools and technologies that may improve performance, uptime, and cost benefit. 
  • Provide on call support in a 24x7 production environment to triage and resolve issues while also maintaining a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • 7+ years’ experience with database systems administration, operations, and/or reliability engineering.
  • BA/BS degree with relevant experience and/or certifications in lieu of a degree.
  • Advanced SQL Server training and/or coursework preferred.
