The Assistant In Training (AIT) is a professional within the turfgrass industry who is seeking further development and mentoring in the Golf Course Management business. The goal of the AIT position is to develop advanced knowledge of the entire golf course maintenance operation while honing skills. The AIT is critical to the success of the operation as this individual will develop a diverse amount of skills and assist within the many different roles of the department. The AIT will be responsible in supervising subordinate staff and making critical decisions throughout the maintenance operation. Supervising subordinate staff on special projects, general maintenance and water management practices are common. The AIT must have excellent communication skills and be able to direct work as directed by the Assistant and or Golf Course Superintendent. The AIT will work closely with key management in decision making as it relates to moisture management strategies and golf course playability. The AIT will be responsible for a tremendous amount of data collection as it relates to our management strategies and programming. .

Responsibilities:
• This individual will be responsible for assisting with and overseeing the intense water management programs that are implemented each year to provide the highest quality playing surfaces throughout the golf course.
• The AIT will supervise, assist and educate subordinate staff on the proper techniques used in all maintenance applications throughout the golf course. Will assist Superintendents and Assistants in ensuring specific training needs and standards.
• The AIT will be responsible for understanding all related job tasks within the department and must be able to perform all tasks as they relate to maintaining the golf course. These tasks require the use of but not limited to the use of all mowing equipment, heavy machinery (tractors, skidsteer, excavator), all application equipment, topdressers and rollers.
• The AIT will be responsible to direct the work and supervise crews of 3-5 individuals as it relates to special projects. This individual will be responsible for the proper execution of any projects that he or she is assigned.
• Will assist the Golf Course Superintendents and Assistants in the development of chemical and fertility plans for the golf course property. Will have a good understanding of the use of chemistries and different types of fertilizers that are used within the industry.
• The AIT may be responsible for setting water management programs through the irrigation system. This individual will have an understanding of the extensive operations system and will be required to be able to set irrigation programs when asked.
• AIT will be responsible for assisting Application foremen and techs with any applications that may be needed.
• The AIT will render professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents and any other managing body as required.
• Will assist with daily observations of the golf course pertaining to our intense maintenance programs. Assists with adjusting and modifying programs.
• Assisting with training of staff along with staff safety.
• Assure that environmental, compliance and maintenance facilities are monitored and maintained.
• Maintain pesticide license and continual education in the field of concern or related
• Ensures organization of the GCM facility, equipment and grounds.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities of specific subordinate staff and will do so in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include employee training; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
