Registered Nurse I Radiology

Summary of Essential Functions 

• Responsible for routine and emergency care on patients in Radiology that are in need of nursing care. 
• Assist in maintaining professional standards of patient care and in teaching technical aspects of procedures to other staff.

Educational Requirements 

• High school graduate or equivalent. 
• Graduate of an accredited RN program. 
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. 

Qualifications and Licenses 

• Registered with the BON for the State of Texas. 

Certification/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities 

• PALS 
• BCLS (may be obtained during training). 
• Minimum of one year of special procedures or critical care experience. 
• Required BCLS, Basic Arrhythmia and ACLS which may be taken in the first six months of employment. Also required is IV Conscious Sedation which may be taken in the first month of employment. 

Physical Requirements 

• Moderate amount of lifting and positioning of patients and equipment as well as, transportation of patients via cart or wheelchair. 
• Walking or standing for 80% of the time, sitting for 20 % of the time. 
• Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time as well as walking and sitting; see small objects, have good eye-hand coordination and hear normal sounds with background noises. 
• Subject to electrical, radiation and biohazards. 
• Working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours. 
• Exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids 

Duties and Responsibilities 

• Identifies the patient and exam: Verifies correct patient by armband and medical record number. Reviews the patient’s chart to verify the physician’s order, making corrections and additions to order if applicable. Coordinates inpatient procedures with scheduled outpatients to reduce waiting time for exams and to assign priority to procedures. Thoroughly explains procedure to the patient and their family and obtains necessary consent forms. 
• General Radiology: Perform venous puncture on patients needing IV contrast injections. Insert Foley catheters as needed. Prepares and checks drug levels, emergency equipment and supplies. Provides IV conscious sedation administration and support. Acts as the liaison between Radiology and Nursing Service. 
• Possess understanding of procedures and equipment used. Prepares and checks drug levels. Maintains knowledge of medication most commonly used in practice area. Correctly administers medications and emergency drugs. Calculates IV rates. Monitor patient status during procedure. Update physician as needed. Rapid arrhythmia and hemodynamic instability recognition. Revised 2/2022 
• Working knowledge of ancillary equipment. Maintain accurate records. Assist with patient teaching regarding all angiography procedures. Demonstrate working knowledge of ancillary equipment, in addition to maintaining accurate records. 
• Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
