General Information:

ISSS seeks a graduate student with significant global experience to support the ISSS Student Team in engaging the JMU international community by creating, facilitating, and marketing programming that supports, meets the needs of, and highlights the strengths of current and prospective international students at JMU.



This is an academic year appointment. The start date for this GA position will be training which may begin as early as August 10th, 2026. This position requires you to be available for training between August 10th and 19th. Most hours of this assistantship take place between 8am and 5pm, Monday - Friday. Periodically, this position will help with programming during weekend hours. This position will work 20 hours per week.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Programming – work alongside ISSS staff to create and run programs and activities for international students (e.g., welcome back events, grocery trip for graduate students, social events, cultural programing, etc.) throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. The GA will attend most programs to engage with students and encourage connection and engagement between students and the ISSS team.

- Marketing – work with ISSS Associate Director to promote ISSS programming, celebrate international holidays and cultural events, and share information, events, etc. pertinent to the international student community through the ISSS social platforms; create graphics and text for social media content and emails; and build an online community for international students through the ISSS Instagram account (@intldukedog).

- Orientation – work with ISSS staff to plan orientation schedules, content, and activities; engage with new students to create a welcoming environment and excitement for their JMU journey; participate in and lead activities, sessions, and excursions.

- On-demand Projects – work with the ISSS team to execute projects that are responsive to needs that appear during the semester.

- Administrative – work with the ISSS team to create resources for cultural adjustment (e.g., pre-arrival information, orientation guides, etc.) and for awareness of the international student community to the JMU community.

- Assessment – work with the ISSS Associate Director to conduct assessments of student needs and program/services.
