Senior Technician – Neuroscience

Akron General’s 9100 Neuroscience Unit is a private 22-bed unit that cares for patients who suffer from strokes, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries), spinal cord injuries, and s/p craniotomy (after staying in NSICU). Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Senior Technician is responsible for performing various duties assisting in the care patients as assigned by the registered nurse.

A caregiver in this position works from 3pm-11:30pm

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies. 
  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height. 
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.  
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 
  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 
  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  
  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or obtain certification during new hire period
  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
  • One year of recent acute care experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination
  • Extensive standing and walking
  • Medium Work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Physical Demand requirements in excess of those for Light Work
