    Job Description

    Job Summary:

    The purpose of the Lead Machinery Engineer is to provide technical expertise within Messer’s Project Execution department regarding various forms of plant rotating equipment including design, specification, fabrication, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Since every single project requires rotating equipment, the engineer will be involved in some capacity with a wide variety of projects with a large range of technical complexity.

    This position will primarily provide value to the organization by executing deliverables for project engineers/managers, providing preliminary equipment design/cost bases to the proposals group, and interfacing with other engineering disciplines as required.

    This position will also actively work on specifications and standards, and interfacing with other engineering disciplines as required to successfully meet project targets and develop/mentor junior engineers in their discipline.

    Principal Responsibilities:

    • Individual contributor in the design, specification, selection, commissioning and troubleshooting of rotating equipment including pumps, compressors, expanders, refrigeration systems, and cooling towers.
    • Oversight of engineering organizations that support Messer Americas projects, including review of designs, calculations, specifications, schedules and procedures.
    • Oversight of field contractor organizations that support installation, commissioning, and maintenance including participation in site JSA, work planning, and management of contractors such as millwrights, alignment specialists, and vendor commissioning engineers.
    • Oversight of equipment vendors:
      • Equipment design and drawing reviews
      • Critical Supplier Audits
      • Factory acceptance testing
      • Ability to follow project from the initial specification through design and manufacture, construction and installation, commissioning and resolution of field issues
      • Participation in HAZOPs and risk assessments as a technical contributor
      • Develop, plan and implement QA/QC plans relating to rotating equipment
    • Interface with the proposals group to generate preliminary design and cost information for projects
    • Serve as technical resource for other departments within Messer Americas (such as plant operations) as needed for existing rotating equipment.
    • Development of Messer internal rotating equipment standards and procedures
    • Representative of Messer for professional standard committees such as CGA

    Required Skills:

    • Broad knowledge of specifying, operating, and maintenance of compressors including centrifugal, reciprocating, oil-flooded screw, dry-screw, and diaphragm.
    • Broad knowledge of specifying, operating, and maintaining cryogenic expanders including compressor-loaded (“compander”), oil-brake, and generator loaded.
    • Broad knowledge of specifying, operating, and maintaining pumps including reciprocating, single-stage centrifugal, multistage centrifugal, cryogenic and non-cryogenic applications.
    • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards such as API-617, API-618 and CGA
    • Knowledge of relevant industry practices such as oxygen cleaning and safety best practices
    • Knowledge of the safe design and use of equipment in various systems including liquid and gaseous nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide systems
    • Must be willing to travel (25-40% of time) or as business requires.

    Qualifications

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor of Science/Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. A graduate degree is not required but considered a plus.
    • Minimum of 7-15 years relevant experience with rotating equipment including pumps, compressors, expanders, refrigeration systems, cooling towers, and fans.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Graduate Degree
    • Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is a plus
