Summary

Maintains electrical right of ways, by trimming and removing trees, shrubs, bushes and other obstructions from electric utilities in and around high voltage lines.   

Examples of duties

The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description.  The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

  • Performs right of way line clearance by climbing trees using various gear and equipment; operating hydraulic chain saw; operating power chain saw; using various roping skills and techniques; and dragging and chipping various sized, shaped and weighted limbs, brushes, logs and wood; and operating hydraulic aerial lift. Activities are performed in and around high voltage lines.
  • Keeps equipment in “ready to use” status by sharpening chain saws; inspecting and repairing chippers, chain saws and other necessary tools; inspecting ropes and climbing gear for safety; and inspecting the truck for safety.
  • Assists line technicians in maintenance of electric lines and poles.
  • Responds to storm work and on call by clearing and removing obstructions from electric lines; and assisting in line maintenance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED.  No experience required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above

Certifications/Licenses 

  • Valid Driver’s License (CDL – Class B) with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria 
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Line Clearance Certification

Job Knowledge 
Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.

Reading
Intermediate:  Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, and thesauruses. 

Writing
Intermediate:  Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.  

Math
Intermediate:  Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.  

Communication Skills 
Requires providing basic information to others outside direct reporting relationships on procedures or general policies.  Contact may require the consideration of different points of view to reach understanding and gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

Independence and Decision-Making
