Job Description
New York Times Cooking is looking for a video journalist to bring engaging cooking videos to our on and off-platform audiences. You will support initiatives to bring more videos onsite into the NYT Cooking product, while also creating engaging cooking content for our growing YouTube channel. You will produce videos that range from short-form hands-and pans-style recipe videos to hosted cooking demonstrations, all of which will help strengthen our recipes and introduce new audiences to NYT Cooking. The video producer should be familiar with all aspects of production, have a background in digital video and a passion for creating engaging social food content.
The right candidate will have excellent video production skills, be data driven, creative, and have strong instincts around videos that engage, share, and offer service in a crowded, online video landscape. You will be responsible for setting up and coordinating video shoots and work in collaboration with the cooking team to identify recipes, meet deadlines and publish video material on-site. Our ideal candidate is passionate about food and familiar with the digital video landscape. The role will also require flexibility in producing and publishing video material for off-platform and social stories.
Collaboration and collegiality are a must. Above all, we are looking for someone who works well in a team environment.
Responsibilities:
Shoot and edit single- and multi-camera video in the studio, in the field (restaurant kitchens and cooks’ homes) and remotely, ranging from overhead hands-and-pans cooking videos to personality-driven storytelling.
Pitch and develop ideas for NYT Cooking video content.
Cast and coordinate logistics between in-house production and freelancers
Publishing videos in NYT Cooking’s content management systems.
Generate and execute ideas for highly watchable videos in varying lengths and formats.
Collaborate with writers, editors, food stylists, prop stylists, chefs, and others to create videos at a level consistent with the Times standards for recipe presentation, cooking technique, and accuracy. You will be on the lookout for recipes and ideas that can easily be turned into videos that delight and inform our audience.
You will provide effective and helpful notes on videos created by other producers during the editing process
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
You will report to the Supervising Producer, NYT Cooking.
Basic qualifications:
3+ years of experience (preferably in a digital video).
You will edit quickly and accurately with Adobe Premiere Pro.
Proven ability to direct, produce, shoot, light, and edit.
