Student: Mechanical Designer Assistant

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a USU student in Engineering or a related field to assist full-time Mechanical Designers.
This is a year-round position, not a summer internship or temporary role. Students design their schedule each semester to accommodate their classes. Students generally keep their position until they graduate and may be retained up to one semester after graduation as they apply for full-time positions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist Mechanical Designers in the following areas:
- Engineering-prototype part generation operating SDL’s 3D printer
- Prepping parts for use in prototype form (may require sanding and fitting)
- Performing basic 3D printer maintenance
- Maintaining the consumables inventory
- Receiving work orders and scheduling parts for printing
- Documentation of billing records
- Interfacing with vendors for non-user serviceable maintenance and upgrades
- Maintaining CAD common parts and materials databases
- Keeping common parts library accurate in-sync with SDL’s inventory database
- Creating new common parts as needed using parametric design
- Keeping materials library up-to-date and relevant for both CAD and CAE software
- Entry-level drafting
- Producing basic mechanical drawings accurately communicating design intent for fabrication and archival purposes under the supervision of a Mechanical Designer or Engineer
- Updating and maintaining CAD templates
- Must be a USU student with at least two years completed working toward a MS/BS in Engineering or related field
- Must have at least one year remaining in school
- Must be able to work on-site in Logan, Utah
- Availability to work up to 20 hours per week during school (may work up to 40 hours per week through school breaks depending on program needs)
- Extreme attention to detail with high level of craftsmanship
- Effective organizational and communication skills
- Experience with CAD software, 3D printing, and MS Office
- Ability to work flexible hours working occasional nights and weekends
- Demonstrated ability to stay on task without supervision
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and a risk-conscious mindset
- Must be a US citizen, lawful permanent resident of the US, or other US Person
- Experience with Solid Edge/SolidWorks
- Experience with Cura or other slicing software
