GENERAL SUMMARY


The Interventional Radiology (IR) Medical Assistant is responsible for the pre-op and post-op care of all IR patients. The IR Medical Assistant performs work as required and functions as an effective member of the IR team.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Make Pre-op call to the patient one week prior to the procedure explaining pre-operative instructions.
  • Send post-op prescriptions to the patient’s pharmacy before the day of the procedure. These can be sent electronically, by fax or phoned in.
  • Call patient on the day of consult for review of medical history and current medications.
  • Reconciliation of patient medications.
  • Coordinate with Pathology for biopsy pickup along with completing any information that may need to be sent along with the specimen.
  • Patient Pre-Op including start of IVs and screening questionnaires.
  • Monitors patient vitals both pre-op and post-op and notifies nurse or physician of any vital changes.
  • Post-Op procedures including proper documentation, patient/family transport communication
  • Changes dressings, applies bandages, removes sutures and performs other first aid procedures.
  • Uses CPR skills when necessary.
  • Review discharge instructions with patient.
  • Ensures proper hand off of responsibilities once their task is completed.
  • Scan inventory used for patients outside of the procedure room in the inventory management system
  • Remove used linens and restock linens.
  • Unpack and restock inventory.
  • Assist in procedure room turnover.
  • Monitors hazardous material box.
  • Regularly adheres and supports compliance and accreditation efforts as assigned including, but not limited to OSHA, HIPAA & CMS guidelines for Parts C & D on General Compliance and Fraud, Waste & Abuse.
  • If needed, assists front desk with patient chart prep, scheduling and phone calls.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.


Requirements

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Medical Assistant Certification or Registration required.
  • BLS certification required.


KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

  • Ability to perform well in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR, Practice Management.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Project Management.
  • Vendor relations (for those MA’s that are required to order office and clinical supplies).
  • Knowledge of database management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Delivers exceptional patient service throughout all interactions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program required. Medical Assistant Certification required.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 6 months experience working within a physician’s office desired. Interventional Radiology and/or Urology experience desired.
