Job Description

The Department of Chemistry at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track faculty position, beginning in August 2025. Candidates with significant experience in chemical education and/or organic chemistry are encouraged to apply. The position title and rank will be determined based on the candidate’s degree and experience. The successful applicant is expected to excel in teaching courses in chemistry, chemical education, and GOB (general, organic, and biochemistry) based on the candidate’s specialty and departmental need. In addition, the applicant is anticipated to conduct chemistry scholarship, provide research training to students with diverse backgrounds, and engage in professional development and mentoring opportunities. The candidate is also expected to have a strong service commitment to the department, the College, the University, and the community.

The typical distribution of assigned responsibilities is 60% instruction, 20% scholarship, and 20% service, although this may be negotiated depending on the needs of the department in consultation with the department chair. A typical teaching load is equivalent to 12 credit hours per semester.

Minimum Qualifications: 

• M.S. in chemistry (or closely related field) from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in chemistry (or closely related field) from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution. ABD applicants will be considered.
• experience in chemical education research with a plan for a viable research program involving undergraduate students that can be pursued in a regional comprehensive university, and ability to obtain externally-funded research program
• proficiency with curriculum development and assessment
• ability to teach high school chemistry teachers pursuing an MSE degree how to incorporate chemical education research practices into their classrooms to enhance the quality of their instruction
• demonstrated ability to effectively communicate chemistry concepts to undergraduate students in both lecture and laboratory settings, and evidence of fostering an inclusive learning environment for students

The FHSU chemistry department (www.fhsu.edu/chemistry) has eight full-time faculty positions representing all of the major sub-disciplines of chemistry.  At the undergraduate level, we offer B.A. and ACS-approved B.S. degrees with optional emphases in biochemistry, forensic science, and teacher education.  At the graduate level, we collaboratively support the chemistry concentrations of two master’s degrees: the Master of Science in Education (M.S.E.) and the Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.).
