­­Overview:  

The Transuranium Analytical Laboratory (TAL) in the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Shift Supervisor to support daily analytical operations for Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC) isotope production, Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) researchers’ isotope purification projects, and United Cleanup Oak Ridge (UCOR)’s environmental monitoring programs. This role involves overseeing technicians, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and supporting research and production of radioisotopes.

 

As part of our team, you will oversee multiple shift technicians completing detailed sample preparations, radiochemical separations and measurement protocols and assist in the development of novel separation and measurement protocols for complex nuclear matrices. You will also serve as the TAL leader of operations on all hot cell activities including nuclear material inventory responsibilities. Your work will support ORNL scientific staff conducting research and chemical operations associated with the production and purification of radioisotopes and R&D for nuclear fuels.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the TAL Group Leader and Operations Supervisor to schedule and prioritize radioanalytical requests for research projects and isotope production campaigns.
  • Assist in the coordination of hot cell, glovebox laboratory, and radiochemistry counting room operations.
  • Supervise TAL shift technicians, ensuring appropriate training and mentoring on high-level nuclear operations, TAL standard operational procedures (SOPs), analytical methods, and work aids.
  • Participate in the development, review, and verification, and validation of TAL laboratory, counting room, and hot cell standard operational procedures (SOP’s), Analytical Methods and Work Aids as well as all applicable facility procedures.
  • Assist in identifying potential problems, recognizing unexpected results, and troubleshooting operational problems associated with all TAL laboratories, hot cell, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Serve as the TAL leader of operations on all hot cell activities including maintaining nuclear material inventory in TAL hot cell.
  • Serve as the TAL Radioactive Waste Technical Lead: Maintain TAL hot cell, glovebox, and hoods in safe working conditions by minimizing dose and contamination levels.
  • Uses laboratory hood, gloveboxes, tele-manipulators, and specialized hot cell analytical equipment.
  • Maintain equipment knowledge and provide leadership in daily operations.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree with at least 5 years of related experience in high level nuclear operations including working in C-zone laboratories, glove boxes, and shielded hot cells. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered (AS degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or a HS diploma and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience). 
  • At least 3 years of experience is required in high level nuclear operations including working in C-zone laboratories, glove boxes, and shielded hot cells.
  • Experience with gamma detectors, gross alpha/beta detectors, liquid scintillation detectors, and gas flow proportional counters is required.
  • Expertise with sample preparation methods used in isotopic and elemental characterizations is required.
  • Experience leading the process of high-level radioactive waste is required.
  • Possess Rad Worker II qualification.
