About the role

DEPT OF HEALTH SERVICES

“Promoting Health and Wellness for all Arizonans” is the motto of the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). ADHS promotes and protects the health of Arizona’s children and adults and sets the standard for personal and community health through direct care, science, public policy and leadership. ADHS is an award winning, nationally recognized department and is one of the largest in Arizona State Government with a budget of approximately 500 million dollars and workforce of approximately 1,550 employees. Visit our website at http://www.azdhs.gov

The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) is located at 24th Street and Van Buren in Phoenix, Arizona. The Hospital operates twenty-four (24) hours per day, three hundred sixty-five (365) days per year. ASH operates two separately licensed hospitals on the campus which provide long-term inpatient psychiatric care to Arizonans who have been court-ordered to receive psychiatric treatment, through either the civil or criminal process. We focus on providing care to those who need longer treatment to achieve goals which could not be met with local treatment.

Our Civil Hospital provides care to those individuals who have been determined by the courts to require treatment pursuant to our civil commitment statutes. Often, these individuals have received extensive local treatment before coming here. Our Forensic Hospital serves as the secure facility for those who have been determined by the court to either receive restoration to competency treatment or who have been found to be guilty expect insane for a violent offense.

Co-located on our 93-acre campus is the Arizona Community Protection and Treatment Center (ACPTC). ACPTC is the only state facility (and one of only 20 nationwide) that actively treats individuals who have been court-ordered to receive treatment for their sexual offenses. This program is licensed as a Behavioral Health Specialized Transitional Facility and is managed by the same Executive Team that manages the hospitals.

The Hospital's mission, which guides all that we do, is to “Provide evidence-based, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed care to the individuals receiving care in order to facilitate their successful transition to the least restrictive alternative possible.” We provide state-of-the-art inpatient and residential psychiatric care in an environment of dignity and respect. Interdisciplinary care in all programs is delivered in collaboration with the patient, family, legal representatives and community providers with a focus on recovery and community reintegration.

Our hospitals are accredited by the Joint Commission (TJC), and our civil hospital is also certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). All our facilities are licensed through the Arizona Division of Licensing Services.
