Pay Range: $386,730- $496,620 annually

Job Description

We are seeking an Associate Deputy Director for Science and Technology to work closely with the Laboratory’s Deputy Director for Science and Technology (DDST) and with Laboratory senior management in formulating and carrying out activities to advance the Laboratory’s science, technology, and engineering foundations and to ensure cutting-edge scientific capabilities are available to support the Lab’s national security missions.

The Office of the DDST is responsible for strategic support of LLNL’s scientific enterprise. In partnership with discipline and mission leaders, the Office prepares LLNL’s Science and Technology Investment Strategy; allocates more than $200M in annual internal investments; nurtures the Lab’s Core Competencies; oversees the Lab’s PostDoc program; and represents LLNL’s science and engineering enterprise and its research outcomes to a number of external communities including NNSA, DOE, external review committees, university partners and other academic institutions, the private sector, and the broader scientific community. On behalf of the Lab, the Office leads research integrity and research security awareness and assurance efforts.

The selected individual will be responsible for actively leading, managing, and/or collaborating with numerous other senior Laboratory leaders on a diverse range of institutionally significant issues across all parts of the Laboratory and the broader DOE and NNSA enterprises. This position is a direct report to the DDST and serves in that role when needed.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will

  • Represent and implement objectives and initiatives of the DDST Office, working with the DDST to recommend and establish strategic priorities and approaches to issues. Determine, as required, integrated strategies and tactical approaches for major Office programs.
  • Serve as the LLNL Research Security Officer, bolstering Laboratory staff members’ awareness of the broad dimensions of research security. Collaborate with researchers, expert advisers, and leadership to understand and mitigate research security risks, to develop and implement processes, to assess performance, and to continuously improve the Lab’s approaches. 
  • Collaborate in, engage with, and lead or co-lead high-level institutional committees, including the Principal Deputies Committee. Advise on high-level decisions, and prepare informative supporting materials for decisions in areas where rules are imprecise and decision outcomes may introduce risks of audits and/or potential impacts on the ability of the Lab to conduct activities necessary for its responsibility as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC).
  • Team effectively with LLNL senior leaders and others directly, and in high-level meetings such as the Business Council and the Senior Leadership Team, to identify issues, decide on potential solutions, and enable solutions through policy determinations, resource allocations, and consensus building.
  • Plan, organize, set clear goals, and execute initiatives for the DDST and the Director’s Office in a manner informed by extensive knowledge of the Laboratory, applying expert problem-solving skills, and exhibiting sensitivity to the perspectives of key stakeholders both internal and external to LLNL.
  • Partner with DDST Office team members, assuring appropriate processes are in place and executed to carry out the programs under the DDST, interacting to resolve issues, and delivering on institutional initiatives.
