Job Description:

The Nebraska State Historical Society is seeking a skilled and dedicated Maintenance Specialist to ensure the functionality of our facilities. Under the supervision and assistance from our Facility Manager, you'll ensure our buildings are safe, well-maintained, and welcoming for visitors and staff alike. Your responsibilities will include surveying and repairing mechanical systems, maintaining electrical and HVAC systems, performing manual repairs, and overseeing general upkeep.

Job duties

• Performs maintenance of electrical systems (eg. replace light bulbs and ballasts, etc.).

• Monitors and maintains HVAC and other systems and conducts repairs as necessary.

• Performs manual repairs when necessary (eg. fix locks and doors, etc.).

• Conducts general upkeep procedures (eg. building exterior and landscaping) and other tasks as assigned {eg. painting, carpentry, etc.).

• Supervises internal and external custodial team, including directing, assigning, and monitoring work.

• Collaborates with various NSHS teams to ensure buildings are visitor-friendly.

• Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: helping other departments, participating in interdepartmental committees and working groups; participating in community outreach events.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree or equivalent vocational education in construction, industrial engineering, HVAC, welding, or other building trade. Experience in building maintenance, a mechanical trade, or performing safety inspections, investigations or training may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis as determined appropriate by the agency. 

 

Preferred: Knowledge/Experience in the following fields are preferred: HVAC, Electrical, Carpentry, Customer service.

 

Other: This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver’s license or another form of reliable transportation.  

 Regular and reliable attendance is required.


 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, safety practices, and general maintenance processes and methods.

• Working knowledge of hand tools, and metering devices.

• Ability to interact personably with internal and external customers, including but not limited to staff, visitors, and venders.

• Problem solving ability - Abiliity to research, analize, troubleshoot problems.

• Adaptability - Ability to adapt to changing priorities, equipment, and technology.

• Time Management Skills - Ability to plan and prioritize projects and complete projects in a timely manner.

• Teamwork - Ability to recognize strengths in self and others and use them to achieve work goals.

• Ability to cope with stress - Must be able to work well under pressure in emergency situations.
