The Senior Corporate Counsel is part of CarMax’s Labor & Employment Legal Team. This position provides legal counsel and general business legal support to CarMax corporate business departments and management, focused primarily on the federal, state, and local labor and employment laws related to CarMax’s business and human resources operations. This lawyer will report directly to the Assistant Vice President of the Labor & Employment Legal Team. This role also provides legal counsel to human resources representatives and managers in assigned regions and states, and facilitates and manages long-term, large-scale legal projects. This role specifically advises cross-departmental teams on federal, state, and local legal obligations and risks associated with new emerging company initiatives as they apply to company employees and operations. This position advises the business of new or emerging legal requirements to enable execution and innovation, proactively manage risk, optimize business practices, and implement necessary changes. This role will also serve as legal advisor to certain compliance administrators.
What you will do – Essential Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel and operational risk management for compliance with all state and federal employment related laws, such as the FLSA, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, NLRA, ADEA, EPA, ADA, FMLA, USERRA, IRCA, and OSHA.
- Legal point of contact for all employment matters arising out of multiple assigned CarMax regions.
- Provide specialized legal advice related to CarMax pay plans to CarMax payroll and compensation teams.
- Represent and defend CarMax directly at employment arbitration hearings, frequently without the assistance of outside counsel.
- Analyze and monitor legal and legislative trends, and take appropriate action, to ensure the enforceability of the CarMax Dispute Resolution Program. Direct and manage employment litigation in federal and state court that is subject to the CarMax Dispute Resolution Program and the Federal Arbitration Act.
- Represent and defend CarMax in regulatory investigations and actions before federal and state government agencies, including the United States Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the National Labor Relations Board.
- Provide daily legal analysis and advice regarding federal and state employment laws to field human resources representatives and field managers.
- Control outside legal costs for labor and employment related matters.
- Collaborate with the business and other Legal Team members on cross-functional projects while providing support for new and existing innovations, products and services.
- Facilitate and manage large scale special projects on an as-needed basis, or otherwise act as primary legal counsel on such projects.
Qualifications and Requirements

- Law degree.
- Member in good standing with the bar of a U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum 6 years of legal experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
- First chair employment arbitration hearing experience and/or equivalent first chair employment trial or administrative hearing experience.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships within immediate area of business, and when necessary, identify resources in other areas of the business that can be utilized.
- Ability to determine customer-specific needs and put forth actions to meet those needs.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively, and manage own time to meet goals/objectives.
- Ability to develop and execute a plan with minimal direction.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate legal developments and advice to associates, all levels of management, outside counsel, opposing counsel, and regulatory authorities.
- Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in connection with researching and analyzing the law, assessing impact on business processes, and making recommendations to business units to effectively manage legal and operational risks.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills required to collaborate and advise other Legal Team members and internal and external clients.
